Announcement: Carrypad launches ‘Smart, Mobile and Internet-Connected’ Website.

What is a Carrypad?

At this point it’s just a name. I have my own definition but we’re not letting that dictate the devices and software that appear on Carrypad. Maybe one-day we’ll make a real Carrypad but for the time being we’re simply focused on the handheld internet experience.

Will you be covering business and productivity use?

We only have one 24hr day and there’s very little chance to split business and pleasure 100% so some things we cover will of course be interesting for business and productivity fans. As we move forward, mobility might become more important than a fully-featured office suite so more and more overlap is expected but for the time being, we’re focused on enjoyable internet experiences based around consumer usage.

UMPCPortal future.

It will surprise a lot of people to learn that the ultra mobile PC market is still as strong as it was in 2006 so UMPCPortal will continue with that focus of pro-web, technology analysis, niche user scenarios and true desk-to-desk mobile productivity. The community at UMPCPortal has been amazingly helpful and engaged too so there’s another reason not to change anything. I’ll still be posting ultra mobile PC and productivity-focused news and analysis at UMPCPortal.

Can I help?

Yes! We’re looking to expand the team at Carrypad and UMPCPortal with contributors from various parts of the world. Contact us if you think you would fit in here and we’ll get you set up with a guest post. We’ll probably be looking for a few moderators for the community section so raise your hand if you want to get involved. (See contact form above.)

Advertising.

Running a website for 3 years has been tough. 2009 was, to be honest, quite a serious struggle. I’m a strong believer that advertising should be done in the product portal where potential customers are more interested in knowing about suppliers and prices but in order to survive and stay independent we have no choice but to drop some advertising in here and there. Most of it is affiliate based and we promise not to link you to affiliate suppliers without telling you. We chose them carefully so we’re confident you’ll be happy with them but even so, we’ll tell you when there’s something in it for us!

Feedback.

Always welcome of course. Use the contact form if you spot problems or areas that could be improved.

Your blog on Carrypad.

Want to blog about your device or your passion? If it’s related to mobile or handheld internet devices, umpcs, tabletPCs or even your favorite smartphone, let us know and we’ll set you up with some space. Your blogs will appear in the community section and on your personal website. (Private domain names supported)

Friends of Carrypad.

We want to send a shout out to our friends around the web. JKKMobile and Netbooknews, Liliputing, Pocketables (congrats on the baby, Jenn!) MobileRead, ArchosFans, GottabeMobile, JKontheRun, PDA.pl, WMPowerUser, NewGadgets, Slashgear, UMPCfever, laptopgpsworld and many more. Without the communication that goes on between sites and bloggers, there would be no UMPCPortal or Carrypad.

ummm… sorry if this is a dumb question but why do you need two sites to cover this subject?

The whole point of these devices is that they (could) do many things and cover multiple useage scenarios – otherwise we would be all out buying a phone, a laptop, a camera, an MP3 player and a SatNav… Or an iProduct.

Surely we want to be able to compare devices across a broad spectrum – from smartphones to netbooks – to find the right device for each person’s need and not to encourage the marketing department (of Whatever Corp) in its continued crusade to fragment the umpc market to match the already fragmented gadget market.

Sigh – still I’m putting Carrypad in my RSS reader…

Is there any rule of thumb for going to umpcportal for XYZ and carrypad for 123 ? Forinstance: Review: W1060 7-inch MID from WireLession. Wouldn’t that be something that is on UMPC as well ? I signed up anyway !

I do remember carrypad. It was pretty good. It looks even better now. I do have a question though, how is it going to differ from umpcportal.com?

Wow! Has it really been four years! I must have been among one of your first email newsletter subscribers to Carrypad ;)
You’ve done a fine job keeping us informed!!!
    Thanks!
