Archos 7 Home Tablet Hands-On Video.

I know I moaned a bit about the potentially weak CPU (a 600Mhz ARM9-architechture Rockchip 2808) on this but credit where credit is due. This is quite the bargain if all you want to do is watch 720p videos at up to 2mbps. (Hey, that’s more resolution than I get on my PAL TV!)

Interestingly, the Archos 7 Home Tablet [info] has USB-Host (via miro-usb port) and composite video out for basic TV playback 2GB RAM (149 Euro version. 8GB 179 Euro version) and it weights 350gm.

We had a quick chat online with Charbax (the guy who made the video) and we tells us that we should expect 7hrs video playback and support for most codecs.

archos7-3

We’d like to get a better feel for how fast the web is on this before recommending it for such use but for video, basic document reading, podcasts, mp3 and just for fun, this is really a bargain.

Since it lacks an accelerometer, my main concern is the ability to reorient from landscape to portrait. Does Aldiko have a setting for that? What about other Android software?

.. it reminds me of the SmartQ 7 – the price is about the same as well as the spec. Have Archos simply taken a “generic” Chinese 7inch pad and branded it? It is intriguing. I can see this selling well because the price is too tempting for what is a decent movie player and simple browser. If I were to own one of these I’d be repeating to myself the mantra, “yeah, but it was so cheap” quite a lot when confronted with slow/mediocre web-flash viewing. ;)

After watching the video, I think its pretty fine machine for its price and usage. Even tho I am looking for some powerful tablets and those are no where close to be in sight but same time I am just very sick of my PC and even laptop so I need a change. This type of device or Adam might be the one I would start from since they are not very heavy on pockets (by price).

Portrait mood is suitable for reading pdfs (and ebooks). By design, my vote goes for Adam but its due-date is longer than this one. Let’s see.

ps. Good energy Charbax, keep it up. :)

    Quite cool, for that price…
For simple web navigation or watching a movie is the best bargain.

I see an app called “youtube.apk” maybe it will work to watch youtube videos, or is the browser able to play them in HTML5 mode?

Wow this guy is way to excited over this, like a dog that you come home to everyday that jumps on you b/c its happy. Well good video.

  7. Benny says:

At least they now have a full line of usable* tablets with real OS. The 9,7 and 5.

  8. FireDragon says:

Haha. I like the use of “usable” here. ;) but very true indeed.

Well it would be dishonest to say that the 9 is the “Ultimate tablet experience”
considering its dumb-as-a-rock processor and windows 7 starter. Although if Android on the 5 got the stability patches it needed it would be way better.
