Apple Contradicts Itself and Puts Me in a Rough Spot With iPhone 4 Antenna Conundrum, Has Me Looking for a New Handset

Posted on 20 July 2010

You’ve likely heard of the iPhone 4 antenna debacle and saw coverage of the recent press conference that Apple held on the issue. Well, as an iPhone 4 owner, I’m quite bothered by what’s going on and the way that Apple has acted toward this issue. First of all, Apple has contradicted itself over the antenna dilemma. Prior to Apple’s July 16th press conference, Bloomberg ran an article titled “Apple Engineer Told Jobs iPhone Antenna Might Cut Calls inch which purported that a senior engineer at Apple had warned Jobs […]

Pixel Qi DIY Screen Installed and Tested

Posted on 19 July 2010

On the day that I stepped outside with my netbook to connect a solar panel and thought ‘hmm, a PixelQi screen would be nice,’ along comes a DIY article and test from Engadget on how to fit a PixelQi screen. Joanna Stern also gives some thoughts about usability and runs some tests to see just how much battery life the new screen would save over the old. It matches what we expected. Installation on a Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 seems very straight-forward and the results in the outdoor scenario are fantastic. […]

‘PalmPad’ Sounds a bit like ‘CarryPad’

Posted on 19 July 2010

This is interesting, at least for us. Palm have registered the trademark PALMPAD in the U.S. according to a news item from MyHPMini. The WePad got crushed and turned into a ‘Tab’ and the EeePad hasn’t actually launched so it will be interesting to see how far ‘PalmPad’ goes. It will also be interesting to see what happens to my 4 year old company ‘CarryPad’ that runs mobile computing websites from Germany. Could this turn into another Smartbook story with a German company aiming for a quick and evil kill […]

Off-Both-Grids With the Viliv S10

Posted on 19 July 2010

I’ve been messing around with Solar energy again today… It turns out that the Viliv S10 has a 9.5v input. Having an input voltage below 12V is always an advantage for solar work and it’s even better when the X70 car adaptor works on the S10. I’ve connected the S10 up to a 24W solar panel and it’s charging the device even when it’s in-use. Given pure sun (2hrs either side of peak sun) it should charge the S10 in about 5 hours. That’s 10 hours usage in 5 hours […]

Apple: Free Cases to iPhone 4 Owners or Refund. I’m Not Satisfied, Considering Changing Phones After Owning the Last 3 iPhones

Posted on 16 July 2010

Apple’s press conference is still doing some Q&A as I write, but the gist of it consisted of Apple saying that all phones have the reception issue when held in certain ways and that they don’t actually have a problem that is unique to their device. Still, they say that they want to make customers happy and so they are offering a free case to iPhone users or accepting returns for full refunds through September 30th. Apple says they will present a few different cases for customers to choose from […]
