Dell Venue 8 Pro under $200 at Amazon.com

The Dell Venue 8 Pro, in many respects the best 8-inch Windows 8 tablet out there, has just dropped below $200 at Amazon. I’ve tested them all and trust me, the Dell is the one you should go for if you want the best screen with the best-ergonomics. It’s $198 at Amazon right now.

Update: It’s up to $250 again now. Keep an eye out for more offers. (and note that the Asus VivoTab Note 8 is now up for preorder at Amazon.com)

The Dell Venue 8 Pro was the winner in a sunlight readability test recently and you’ll find our review here.

It’s currently $197.99 at Amazon. The 32GB storage might shock some of you but recovery partition removal, saving to microSD or OneDrive is easy and clearing temporary files isn’t a problem. I’ve got a few 32GB 8-inch tablets and although they need a little care and attention sometimes, they work well. If you have questions before you buy I’ll be monitoring the comments closely here this weekend.

Great deal! Too bad they don’t ship to Sweden. For under $200 it would have been great on the run tablet.

  2. Efi says:

I use shipment forwarding service for Israel. Dell V8P is small so its just 20$ plus local tax but still worth it. I bet there a service like that for Sweden also.

didn’t last long.. $250+ again now

I sometimes wonder if Amazon decreases prices until it sees a bunch of links.

Amazon has some sort of computer algorithm that adjusts prices based upon inventory, demand, and page views. The following site is a graphical price tracker that can be useful in deciding when you should purchase from them. It allows you to see the last 6 months of price history, so you can see when you are approaching historic lows:

What is interesting is that the “price went back up” because Amazon (as a company) isn’t stocking the DV8P any more (they sold out their inventory at $198), and the price you are now seeing is one of the Amazon marketplace vendors instead.

So does this mean that Amazon knows something we don’t about the future of the DV8P?

Did you check Bay Trail tablets’ thermal design and compared them? Good fanless design is still a challenge for manufacturers.

Slim Dell Venue 8 Pro has the worst thermal design from recent 8″ Windows slates. At 20 Celsius room temperature Dell Venue 8 Pro easily achieved 50.2 C under full load, while fat Toshiba Encore remained at 39 C and Lenovo Miix2 8 43 C. (source: notebookcheck)

Thermal design is a really important factor for longevity and durability, worth to check.

    >Thermal design is a really important factor for longevity and durability

Not really.. Most of the electronics would run happily for years at 100*C, the only thing other than your hands that is really impacted by high temperatures is the battery. It would increase the time the device is throttling the cpu (limiting turbo) though.

  9. tataniko says:

Nice response, temperature is not a problem on silicon based transistors, thermodynamic is a fiction, fashionable and faulty designed tablets are not existing, but sarcasm is real.

    Anyway, I miss Steve’ comments.

A few days ago it was $200. CAD at Futureshop.ca (about $180. USD) (plus applicable taxes) for one day only. One forum said it was sold out a few times but restocked a few times as well.

In Dec 2013, it was also the price after the first 20 at $99. at Microsoft Store (retail locations) in Canada and US (i.e. $200). (that I have gotten)

Thermal design is important, but I am not too worried if I am only spending $200. and use it in a non mission critical application. If you are into durability etc, you should at least (a minimum) look into Panasonic Toughbook series and forget Lenovo or Toshiba as they are not designed for extreme durability (or ruggedness).

On the other hand, you can still buy Clover Trail based tablets and they have a much smaller power consumption if you don’t mind the also less performance output.

What is the point? We are talking about 8″ Bay Trail tablets companion and hardware design only and nothing else.

However other 8″ Bay Trail competitors hit good price in some EU countries too, especially Encore and Miix2 8 were bundled with Xbox 360 for free over a months during Christmas time, and this is not comparable Venue Pro 8 overpriced offers, but it is a different story.

Thermal design is most important factor in ultra mobile PC, we have look after there.

  12. D T says:

Then I ask the same question back to you: What’s your point when no news of overheating or melt down of these tablets after they have been in the market for months now? Has there been reports that the Venue Pro 8 has run itself down (thermal protection kicks in, or simply stopped working)?

You are insinuating that because of a higher temperature detected in the Venue Pro 8, then it is of poor design and thus creates a risk and danger situation to the users. So you should explain your point. (ie. proof?)

    It’s $197 again at Amazon.

The best thing about this and Miix 8 is: you can easily make them a UMPC with a clap-on iPad Mini keyboard:
