Amazon have announced their ‘holiday’ best sellers and in the computer category the top 3 places go to Chromebooks. Despite $200 Windows newcomers the Chromebooks remained the top seller for the second year in a row.
In a press release issued on the 26th December Amazon have listed a range of holiday-season facts. Among them were the top-three selling Computers.
- Computers: Acer C720 Chromebook (11.6-inch, 2GB); ASUS Chromebook 13-inch with Gigabit WiFi (16GB, 2GB); HP 11-2010nr 11.6-inch Chromebook (Snow White)
In some respects it’s no surprise that the cheapest laptops on the market were among the best sellers but that all three were Chromebooks is significant. The Acer CB3-111 (11-inch) didn’t make it to the top-3 despite it getting some good reviews and offers over the season but Acer won’t exactly be unhappy as the C720 continues to dominate sales. The price/performance ratio on this laptop continues to be class-leading.
The top-three only applies to the USA market. Amazon Germany haven’t released any data about holiday sales and Amazon UK only include ‘electronics’ in their list where PC’s have no chance against Kindle Paperwhite and Amazon Fire TV which, let’s be honest, make great Christmas presents at half the price of the cheapest laptop. It should also be noted that Windows laptops have featured heavily in best-sellers lists. The HP Stream 11 has amassed a very respectable 366 reviews and is clearly the best-selling of the new low-cost 11.6-inch Windows laptops in the USA. In the UK and Germany there’s little in the way of Chromebooks to be seen in any top-list at Amazon. Chromebooks also remain a small percentage of overall PC sales so some perspective is required when considering these numbers.
Amazon’s holiday season includes Black Friday and therefore extends over about a month of sales up until 25th December.
2014 Chromebook sales were predicted at around 5 million for 2014 with around 10 million predicted for 2015 by some research companies. At the peak of the netbook boom low-cost laptops were selling about 40 million.
