Modern Standby Sleep in Microsoft Windows 10. Overview, tests, problems.

Posted on 18 August 2015

The always-on feature called Connected Standby in Windows 8 has been updated for Windows 10. Modern Standby, as it is now known, has support for HDD-based PCs and allows you to disable WiFi during Sleep which will help preserve battery life. Windows 10 also includes easier controls for preventing applications to run in the background and for controlling notifications which also extend to a new Battery Saver mode. I’ve tested the features on a couple of Windows 10 devices (upgrades) and the results have been extremely varied. This Windows 10 feature needs more work but it’s a huge […]

Fusion Micro Supercomputer. Scampaign or Stupid?

Posted on 18 August 2015

The Fusion Micro Supercomputer is up on Indiegogo and it looks a little too much like the Intel Compute Stick to be true. Ripped-off images, a poor presentation video, bold claims and a suspicious retail price raise more red flags. Fusion Micro need to get their marketing in order if they want to continue. UPDATE: More details…including action against this post.

Inside the battery-powered Ainol Mini PC + Windows 10 upgrade tips.

Posted on 14 August 2015

I’ve upgraded the Ainol Mini PC to Windows 10 and apart from it completely resetting itself to Chinese language everything went smoothly. After doing some battery tests I got a bit curious and opened it up. There was a surprise waiting for me inside. I’ve started some testing which includes Kodi (summary: Great apart from some 1.5 Mbps Hi10p files.) but first let me give you a few images that will help you reset the language. It helps if you have another Windows 10 PC in your own language next to […]

The best travel PC is light, productive, connected and costs just $239

Posted on 13 August 2015

The best travel PC is lightweight, productive, connected and needs to be efficient, relatively rugged and easy to charge.  If you’re looking for a travel, adventure, camping, hiking or off-the-grid PC, you’ll need to read this post. Travel PC Requirements The requirements for a travel PC aren’t difficult to meet but there’s a lot to consider. Travelers are mostly concerned with blogs, emails, image editing, social networking, flexible connectivity and maybe a bit of video editing and a lot of this can be done on a phone or tablet but if you want […]

Testing DIAL, DLNA and Miracast on Windows 10

Posted on 11 August 2015

Ever since I watched the Windows 10 casting presentation at BUILD 2015 I’ve been quite excited about some of the possibilities that a universal Windows 10 can bring to media casting. Look at the $99 Windows dongles and think about Windows 10 Mobile sticks that could challenge Chromecast and Amazon’s products. WiDi and Miracast are improving and there’s DLNA to consider too. I’ve done a few tests on Miracast with Windows 10 and the results look better than before but today I took the time to drill down into DIAL […]

TDL Podcast #511 – Windows 10 upgrade discussion.

Posted on 06 August 2015

I joined the The Digital Lifestyle podcast this week and had an enjoyable and educational hour with Ian, Garry and Jason. Did you know you can sync shared OneDrive folders on Windows 10? I didn’t! And how about updating your Lumia to Windows 10? Apparently it’s not quite ready for mainstream yet, but could be soon. We talk about the Windows 10 upgrade process in the podcast, how smooth it is and how long it takes. How many people have upgraded and how much Windows 10 traffic is flowing on our […]

Thinkpad 8 desktop tests. (USB 3.0, Displaylink, full HD video editing, Windows 10.)

Posted on 05 August 2015

I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad 8 Windows tablet, but not the Thinkpad 8 that was launched in early 2014. The latest version has the high-end Z3795 (Baytrail-T) CPU, 4GB RAM, 128 GB SSD,  LTE and runs a 64-bit version of Windows. CPU and disk performance are well above what you’ll find in the early versions. It also has USB 3.0 support which sets it apart from nearly all 8-inch Windows tablets. It all adds up to the lightest, most powerful, portable and flexible desktop PC that I’ve ever used. The best UMPC to […]
