Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Review

Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 (29)

What a pleasure it has been to test this high quality Ultrabook. What a disappointment it is though to see software affecting the experience. The Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 review is below.

Model tested: 3460-2SG S, a European model with 3G that retails for about €1749 and about $1750 when configured at Lenovo USA.

Dell 6430u Ultrabook to be first with WiGig

The Dell 6430U now ready to go, and Dell have just revealed something very interesting and unique. Not only is this a MIL-STD 810G Ultrabook but it’s going to be the first with WiGig – a standard that not only gives you wireless LAN but also transports video and audio to WiGig  docking stations. Now that’s what we like to see, and earlier than expected!

Dell Latitude 6430u Launches for Business Users

Like HP with their Elitebook Folio 9470M, Toshiba with their Z930, Lenovo with their X1 Carbon, Dell are launching a business-focused Ultrabook. The Dell Latitude 6430u was leaked back in May but formal launch was announced by Dell this week.

Clearly they were waiting for Windows 8 but note that this isn’t a touchscreen Ultrabook, despite the pretty touch-led Metro user interface being shown above.

TSA Ordering Up To $2.1M of Ultrabooks for ‘Mobile Missions’

People often suggest to me that an Ultrabook is simply a lightweight laptop. There’s one very important thing they miss – it’s an Intel-based lightweight laptop. Why is that important? It’s important because if you get the word ‘Ultrabook’ into peoples heads, you’ve cut off a huge chunk of competition. Take this RFP for example; The TSA [that’s the USA governments Transportation Security Administration] is asking for proposals to fulfill a requirement for Ultrabooks for around 500 locations in a contract worth up to $2.1 million. This is a big win for Intel and Ultrabooks.

ASUSPro BU400 More Specs, Price

Via the Gadgetjm YouTube channel we’re looking at a hands-on with the very smart looking Business Ultrabook ASUSPro BU400.

BU400

This is obviously a business-oriented Ultrabook with a full set of ports and focus on touchpad and keyboard quality. Anti-glare HD/HD+ displays (options we assume) and..touchscreen. (not seen in the video, maybe it’s an option.) Spill resistant keyboard and reinforced carbon construction. This is a VPro-enabled ‘Ultrabook for Business’ with encrypted hard drive, TPM module and Fingerprint reader. Ports: VGA, headset port, SD card, 3xUSB3.0, HDMI, LAN port. No Thunderbolt port.

Starting price is to be a surprisingly keen 899 Euro so we assume some of the specs above are optional.

It weighs 1.64KG (3.65lb) Availability is, like all Windows 8 Ultrabooks, October.

Intel ‘Ultrabooks For Business’ coming to IDF

VPro imageOver the last few weeks I’ve been researching Ultrabooks for business. I’ve been trying to put together an article series on the security and manageability features you can expect in all Ultrabooks, in selected Ultrabooks with security features and in VPro Ultrabooks. I’ve had calls with Intel and spent way too much time looking at white papers. I’ve learnt about three levels of Identity Protection Technology (Intel IPT), Anti Theft features (Intel AT), 3rd-Gen VPro and Mcafee EPO and Deep Command, Remote KVM, VPro over WiFi, hardware AES encryption and TPM.  Honestly, this is the toughest subject I’ve ever had to deal with in my 6 years as a blogger. Not only are the subjects complex but there are so many options that it’s difficult to tell what you get with an Ultrabook and VPro Ultrabook and now, an ‘Ultrabook for Business.’

Toshiba’s 2012 Ultrabook Line-Up – Z930, U840, U840W – Info + Video

P1100950 (1024x729)

We spent a few hours with Toshiba in Germany yesterday and came away impressed by the commitment that this Japanese company has with the Ultrabook segment. In 2011 we saw the very thin, very light Toshiba Z830 but in mid 2012 there’s now three models to choose from. Entry level with the U840, business with the Z930 and the interesting wide-screen U840W which we think is going to find some friends.

In the USA the models numbers are slightly different but the U845, U845W and Z935 correspond closely to what Europe will see.
