Most of you will already know that Dynamism are starting the pre-order period for the Viliv S5 today. Presale begins 1:00 PM Eastern time on April 27th. The first shipment is expected May 8th.
If you’re still in two minds about it, take a look at this new video from Michael Brito of Intel. He’s done an ‘Un Geek’ video presentation with the S5. You’ll see Tweetdeck, iTunes and a good demo of the on-screen keyboard in use. If you have questions, join myself and JKK at 2030 CEST today where we will be live with the S5 and other devices and will be able to answer your questions in a live chat session. (Go to UMPCPortal.com/live)

Hello Steve–looking forward to the live session here in Seattle. I wonder if the rss feed is disabled again; I keep renewing it in firefox’s native feed tabs, but the newest feed is several days old (re: the hualu mid). Hope there’s an easy fix.
April 27th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
What Berlin time is that – 1 pm eastern?
Thanks!
April 27th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
when it can be delivered? does this little thing support 64bit os? like vista 64bit? or even windows 7 64 bit? 3G modular inside?
April 27th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
no, Atom is only 32-bit.
i’m waiting for the 3G version myself.
i bet this thing sold out in minutes (if not seconds).
April 27th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Just ordered mine a few minutes ago. Two of my friends got theirs too. The site is excruciatingly slow.

Yep it timed out for me several times:-(. Kind of expected…
They really should have done this differently.
April 27th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
I’m still trying to order mine. Keeps giving me error messages. *sigh*
April 27th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
People are trying to give them money, and thats how they chose to conduct it.. Very poor judgment imo.

They’ve restarted their order processing server.
April 27th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
dynamism.com just posted that the Viliv S5 is sold out…!
April 27th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
That was a GREAT two hours of resending information and then losing out. I’m so glad I tried to give them my money…..
April 27th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
I finally got to the order page where I put in all my payment info and hit submit and got the session time out message. Tried going back and it is sold out. I really didn’t need to spend the money, I guess it worked out in the end. Maybe I’ll hold out for the 3G enabled one.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
What a disgrace.
I wasted my time from 1 to 3 pm. Multiple hangups, enter data, then it’s lost.
What an unprofessional company.
Like hell I’ll try again.

I thought I’m the only one who wasted 3 hours of my life !
April 27th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Agreed.. wont make that mistake again. Sloppiest crap I’ve seen in sometime. It can’t be first come, first serve if your server can’t support the load.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Dynamism is a decent company. They are just small and don’t have the big servers like Dell or Amazon. This jumping through hoops to get the S5 sucked but this device is a hot item. The fact that the Korean Won is weak va the dollar allowed this device to come in at a good price. The preorder bonus package was nice too.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Congrats to those that got their order in. I guess I’ll be waiting for the S5 Air version now.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I wonder, how many UMPCPORTAL.COM readers were able to get onto the dynamism.com Viliv S5 pre-sale? Out of 200 units, how many of our readers were able to buy? Just wondering…! maybe Chippy could get a survey to tally it?

Count me as one who made it as far as the “create an account” page several times, at least five, I think. Each time, the server timed out or the page came back with all fields cleared. I have ordered from Dynamism in the past and been happy with their service, but I don’t think they handled this event very well.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
I am not sure what happened, as the Dynamism guys have always been really good with customer response. It took some time to sell out so I wonder what really happened. Could a couple hundred people really crash their system or was someone messing with the process since it was such a highly publicized (for niche geeks) launch? I lucked out and was able to get in right after 1, but I was surprised at how overloaded the servers were.
April 27th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Wow, I really surprised this brought down their servers. Apparently, many more people tried to order it than I’d expected.
April 27th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Ha, you guys should try getting bags of crap from woot, now that is pande-server-monium.
April 27th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
true. BOCs sell out in seconds and lock up the server. Preach on, fellow Wooter!

yeah, three years wooting and I still haven’t snagged one. That’s the real deal!
Though honestly, BOCs and screaming monkeys are a total waste. Screaming monkeys maybe not so much, but that’s for another forum. . . .

Dynamism is a premiere online importer, they are not near as big of a ripoff as they used to be once competition started getting stronger (i.e. conics).
i had a feeling it would go down like this, i just cant believe companies still completely underestimate the power of the internet community.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Spent 2 hours trying and finally got to the final payment page to find they only took American Express cards, which just aren’t common in the UK!
OK, there was a wire transfer option, but with $90 postage I wasn’t going to pay another £20 on top.
Just ordered one from Korea instead…
April 28th, 2009 at 12:55 am
How much did U pay ordering for Korea? Does it include the extra battery, car kit, and case?
April 28th, 2009 at 1:23 am
While I still think they handled this release poorly.. their customer service is PHENOMENAL! I’m quite simply taken aback..
April 28th, 2009 at 1:56 am
Just a heads up for anyone that might have ordered from the UK. It’s going to cost you at least another £150 on top of whatever you paid. VAT, import duty and a possible handling fee will be added on by Fedex.
Too rich for my blood, which is a dam shame as I’d love one of these bad boys.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:48 am
Apparently my posts are getting deep-sixed by moderators. But, if this post is actually is allowed to appear, can anyone suggest alternatives to dynamicism for US customers?
April 28th, 2009 at 5:26 am
Honestly, with all the fuss people are making, what’s a better way to do this? Launch dates always cause this kind of craze. Would it be less important if they weren’t ‘giving away’ all those accessories? Is that what people are upset about?
Maybe I don’t get all the fuss, but when you want something that lots of other people want as well, sometimes you have to invest a little time in it. Didn’t anyone wait in line for a Wii? A PS3? Health Care? Anything?
April 28th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I have no problem waiting in line, and in fact I really expected to possibley not get one. But I think the problem stems from going through all of the effort, and then struggling with the website for two hrs, and still not getting one. If I get to Best Buy early enough then at least I know I will walk away with what I came for.
As to whether there is a better way to have done this online, that’s a valid point, but it doesn’t make the experience any better.

Having purchased several portables from Dynamism over the years, I can assure you that no one offers better support on imported portables than Dynamism.
I’m with Sean: What would be a better way to do this? Lottery? Auction? There is no better way. People are always going to complain about NOT getting a pre-order for a popular product. It’s just the way it is.

I can speak to this point as well, my purchase with Dynamism has been wonderful from a support standpoint. Great turnaround on emails, excellent transaction process (they called me to confirm my purchase!), etc, etc.
I really feel bad that a good company is getting burned for a great offer that people had to sweat over. That’s part of the fun of being a bleeding edge consumer!
April 28th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Try to get in on the S5 sale… got bumped off 4x, gave up.
Ok, no prob… what I really want ( no, the grapes aren’t sour ) is the AIR verson with a 32G SSD.
While I’m at it add the web-cam/mic and MOSTLY do it with the new Intel Atom Z550 chip @ 2GHz
Zoom!
April 28th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
any update on the x70 ? i heard it will not be available to north america. hopefully s5 air will be on sale soon, my fingers cant wait.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
It was definitely an uphill battle. I was running between two computers to see which would win the race. After about 1 and a half hrs and several session timeouts (and hundreds of explatives), I made it as one of 200. I got an unsatisfactory comformation email. No “Congratulations! You survived the gauntlet!”?? I think I was left simply staring at the comfirmation screen dumbfounded. ” Did I uh…. I just um…. so I gues I… uh…. ok then.”
April 28th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Dynamism just announced they would get 400 more S5 and will extend the same free offer also for this batch (due to last ordering issues). Pre-sales would start May 14th and they promised to have more server capacity this time.
April 29th, 2009 at 12:23 am
just like the others, 2 orders got to “submit” after review the order, just to see the dreaded “session expired” message. they called though (I had no clue in which state the orders were left), and let me know (yey! ) that none of the orders went through. but yes, another batch is expected, supposedly, and the next gold rush is May 14′th.
April 29th, 2009 at 12:35 am
Steve — thanks for the mention. I really appreciate it. I have reviewed several MIDS over the last month or so and this one was my favorite.
Talk soon.

**Off-Topic**
Steve,
Do you know if anyone has opened the S5 yet? I want to findout if the HD is swappable to an SSD and possibly space for a 3G Card?
Thanks!
April 30th, 2009 at 7:23 am
(Note this is a copy of something we had just posted on another forum but seems just as applicable here.)
We do read these threads and we understand the frustration.
The free accessory package event (at its aggressive price point) is something we hoped would be a hit. Obviously, we really underestimated how popular. But we understand that a very frustrating part for users was not only NOT getting their order confirmed, but having to wait so long–and retry so many times–just to find out.
Our planning should have been better, and we are currently significantly increasing our capacity. (Although even with the software architecture changes and major server upgrades, performance could still be slow.)
We truly do apologize. And even though the S5 is very constrained, we’ve allocated 400 more units to be sold at the special pricing, hoping that many more community members will be able to participate.
We always appreciate feedback [ sales@dynamism.com ].
Thank you,
Dynamism Sales Team
PS. Please do keep in mind that if you are interested in the S5 but don’t want to deal with the event, it will be for sale at regular price of $599 after the special.
