The Asus T91 is officially available as of today. Amazon US have the T91SA-VU1X-BK up for $499 and immediate despatch. This model doesn’t have the GPS, digital TV or 3G (expect a minimum of $150 premium to get all those options if they ever become available) butit  does include 802.11n and BT2.1

Engadget have their hands on one already an have posted their thoughts. Having read throught the mini-review there doesn’t seem to be any suprises. Battery life is coming in at about 4 hours which, for such a small and light devices, is respectable. I was worried that we would see 2.5-3hrs which could kill it for many pro-mobile users. Engadget enjoyed the touch-enabled applications that Asus have built in but don’t find them that useful. It’s a story we hear often with XP overlay software.

Notebook Review also have a review up. They highlight screen viewing angle issues, test the read speed of the SSD to show an average 55MB/s (good) and compare it to the more expensive U820 (that im thumbing this article on right now.)  They test the on-net battery life and get 4.5hrs, a very respectable result.

PC Magazine’s test isn’t so positivebut Cisco Cheng misses the mobilty aspect of the device completely. “You’re basically paying an obscene amount for a 2 year old netbook with fancy touch inputs.” I’d put it another way.

The T91 is turning out to be a well-built, ultra mobile pc at a price that only the Gigabyte Touchnote competes with. I’m looking forward to a European version although I dont see ny reason to trade in my Touchnote yet. I’ve got the lightweight angle covered by my U820 and the Touchnote is working well as a more comfortable productivity device. If you’re looking to enter the mobile computing space though, the T91 should be very high up on your shortlist.

Ben will be testing the T91 later this month.

We’ll be updating the T91 specification page as we find new information so check back regularly for the latest.

If the T91 had twice the capacity and perhaps a bit cheaper say at least $50, then this would be a slam dunk for Asus.

Can the hardware inside be upgraded?

For £520 you can get a KJS SX4-1SPB (which is the European version (without DVD player.) I know $1 isn’t £1, but often that is how expensive things are in the UK when imported.
For £100 more you can get the version with DVD. £100 more and you get it with 3G – makes a MIFI seem like a good deal.
So there is competition for this size. Also the SX4 has a higher resolution of 1280×768. I think 1024 is for 7″ screens.
