Pepperpad 3 unboxing images. Its white!

Posted on 12 October 2006 by

All credit goes to my Canon S2IS and the i7210 UMPC because the unboxing pics have been shot, checked and uploaded within an 90mins. Not a desktop PC in sight. That SD slot on the i7210 is wonderful. So is the weather here so I’ve done an outdoor shoot today. Click on any of the images to go to through to the gallery.

First impressions – White! Agh. I asked for a black one but OK, at least it looks good in on the blue leather sofa ;-) The start-up program walks you through the Wifi and mail setup and that’s pretty much it. Its probably the easiest PC I’ve ever had to set up. And remember that this is a PC. Its core is an x86 based AMD LX800 530Mhz processor. The same one that runs Windows XP in the Vega UMPC.

Although I have a head full of thoughts at the moment, I won’t write anything more in this post. Enjoy the images in the gallery and let me know what your first impressions are? Is it pretty? What do you think of the keyboard? (I can say that the keyboard is not one of those wobbly rubber key types. The keys are a hard plastic - solid and quick. It beats an on-screen keyboard hands down.

Its automatically downloading the Pepper 3 software update right now so I’ll let that finish (89MB – Download seem pretty quick.) and start to play. (And its just finished so it’s time to end this post!)

More images may go up in the gallery during the day so check back for updates.

Its a great camera for sure.

I just wish it had a hot-shoe or remote flash socket.

    I’m hearing you!

Just fired up an Xterm and kicked of SSH to see whats going on inside this baby! RedHat. 2.6 Kernel.

Have got to finish the i7210 review first though before I get too distracted.

I received my PP3 on the 10th, and I’ve been playing around with it for a couple days now. (I ordered the white one on purpose, and I read today on the Pepper forums that the black ones are in high demand, thus scarce.)

So far my feelings are mixed. I have experienced multiple spontaneous reboots, and hangs requiring manual reboots. It gets uncomfortably hot while charging. Also the battery level indicator seems inconsistant to me.

Other than that I like it a lot. The page load times are nearly as fast as my desktop PC. The wifi works flawlessly. The split thumb keypads work very well for text entry. As I write this I’m sitting in an internet cafe and I would have to describe the experience as pleasant. I can see myself happily using my PP3 for a long time, as long as it stops randomly hanging.

After a few hours my initial thoughts about the market for this device have been somewhat narrowed.

I like the hardware a lot.
    I like the OS.

I need more time to make my mind up about the user interface and target market for the Pepper platform.

I’ve seen one of the reboots you mentioned.

    Regards
    Steve.
