What would Jobs do Now?

Posted on 07 September 2008 by Chippy

Update: Full review now available.

Remember this winning rendering from the WWJD 3 competition at Engadget? I loved it!

wwjdwinner

I think the technology is almost ready Mr Jobs. If you could just give it the magic Apple-dust it would be much appreciated I’m sure.

Did you “shop” that screenshot onto the Raon Digital Everun Note?

This because I notice three external drives even though there is nothing plugged into the device (USB).

Even so, it looks like a dream come through :D

Yes. Its just a demonstration of hardware and technology. The image is simply there to highlight the similarity to the much loved WWJD 3 winner. Actually its not ’shopped, just the device displaying a screen grab.

Looks cool Chippy. I’m about to pull the trigger on getting the Raon Note. I’m waiting on your hands on report. How’s it looking?

Fantastic so far. Some issues to clear up before I declare my undying love for it. (Optical mouse, SSD speed, availability in Black. etc etc.)

One question. Could you put OSX on the Raon?

An OSX86/XP dual-boot on the Note could be very nice indeed, given the relatively powerful hardware.

    Will it run on AMD?

It would seem so, although I know OSX is very picky about the specific hardware it will run on.

    http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.5.2#AMD

I believe community patches are available that will allow previously non-working CPUs and chipsets to run it - although if it’s very new, I’d be surprised if anyone has attempted it with that particular processor.

It’d be very interesting to see if it works - are you allowed to try this sort of stuff on demo gear Chippy?

Is the Usim slot for 3G hsdpa (US/CANADA) ?? Can I pop my Fido card in there ???? Thanks

3G cards on AT&T are the same as 3G SIM cards here so, yes. The SIM cards are all the same, you just need the correct 3G module.

Thank you. So that means that a 3G module is not included in the laptop ? Only the sim slot is there ?

You can run Hackintosh/OSX86 on AMD CPU PCs but it’s a right pain getting everything to work, if not impossible to find drivers for lots of hardware. MUCH easier to run Linux.

If Jobs gets into UMPCs, which he should, they’ll be twice as expensive as similar spec machines which defeats the point for me.

I’ve got my finger on the Dell Ubuntu Inspiron 9 order button. I’ve got a two year old Macbook Pro, and a IPod Touch, but would really like something in between in both size and overall functionality. If Apple responds to this netbook thing I don’t know how much cheaper they could get than the current MacBook without gutting sales. Maybe Apple feels they have it covered with the MacBook and Air?

I’d love a Newton sized device with a full sized touch screen and Apple OS.

    Hello,

I know that this is an off-topic issue, but where do you have buy the everun note?
I wanna something like that, 7 inches with 1024 of resolution, touch screen and with the capacity to be an external disk drive when connected by mini-usb.

    please, tell me something…

    Hugs and thanks for atention

AMD and dual core… methinks we may have a bigger problem than usual regarding heat and noise…

BTW, Chippy, I declare myself a complete nut about cold, silent machines, but it´s getting more and more difficult to remember which units aren’t noisy/toasty/or both. Would it be possible to make an updated short list based on a noise/heat scale?? (Letting us know when the device is just silent, or just toasty, or neither of the two…)

    I would find that extraordinary HELPFUL… ;-)

    Thanks!

Now that I think of it, perhaps it would be easier for you to just give a numeric rate to every machine you review (1 to 10 for “noise”, and the same for “heat”). If you include those numbers in the products list, we would be able to sort the products with a single click, and finding the most silent/coolest machines would be a breeze, without the necessity to bother you every time asking for a particular product “performance”.

I don´t know if that´s difficult to implement, but… pretty, pretty please?? :)

I would hope that when Intel Atom gets a native chipset, things will be better (it’s current one is from the previous chips, and uses more power than the CPU).

    chippy Reply:

Its not so easy to do that because some devices are silent when in power-save and noisy when full-power is used. I’ll certainly put it on the list of to-do’s though.

    [Reply (threaded)]

    andario Reply:
    September 8th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

    Thanks Chippy!

I realize it has its “difficulty”, but you could always rate the power-save and the full-power states separately (pretty much like they do in notebookcheck dot net with the bigger machines, it´s very visual and understandable).

I think it´s going to be a LONG time til heat and noise become a concern from the past, and in the meantime, having this “exclusive feature” in the UMPCportal list would facilitate our shopping immensely.

    Just my wish list, 2 cents-mode. ;-)

    Thanks Chippy!

That’s a lot of unnecessary work for Steve to do that a simple read [by you andario] of the already prepared detailed reviews of the few devices you’re interested in would accomplish.
That’s why they were written correct?

    andario Reply:
    September 8th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

To Jerry, down there (for some reason, the system doesn´t allow me to reply to Jerry´s post directly).

Jerry, I find it peculiar that you find yourself in a position to decide what is both “a lot”, and “unnecessary work”, for someone else who´s been offered just and idea when running his own business (and especially when that particular person has already agreed that it is a not-so-bad idea). But hey, that´s your opinion.

Another opinion could be that 98% of the people I know who have a certain interest in these “new” mobile devices, would NEVER take a fraction of the time I personally take to “know” about them, let alone hunt every single device down just to find out how noisy a particular machine is, coming to a portal like this. However, reading a little table with a scale in it’s way more appealing for the vast majority of the people (knowing what they´re doing, before spending their money, isn´t that the whole UMPCportal idea?). So, by doing what I propose, this customer here, who´s already visiting the portal, is happier; those people who would never come here to read reviews, are more willing to come here; the more traffic for the website makes Steve happier; and perhaps, in the end, the more sales coming from new customers make companies happier, and the whole UMPC business get a little more impulse releasing new models that potentially would make every user out there happier (and hey, that could even include you…).

I don´t know if that´s “correct” for you, but I find amazing how different “opinions” can be, don´t you?

    Have a great day.

Read the reviews of the devices that appeal to you in form and specifications, then use your brain to decide from there. All reviews mention a specific device’s heat and noise levels by ear and tactile discomfort, and the forum is where you can ask Steve generally which device, X or Y, seems to run quieter and/or toastier in his opinion under various conditions.

It’s worth your time to do these things since the UMPC you’ve chosen will cost you hundreds of dollars to own in the end. Price, specs, aesthetics, availability, and necessity will mold that conclusion.
    Good luck with your reading.

I´m sorry Jerry, I made my previous post so long that you couldn´t make it through.

I have to agree, though, with the fact that “use your brain” and “good luck with your reading” are defining sentences in your text.

    Ciao!
