Samsung Bada. Another Open Mobile Platform

Posted on 10 November 2009 by Chippy

Moblin, Maemo, Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile, WebOS, Blackberry OS, Symbian, Limo, OpenMoko, TuxPhone, Qtopia and now, Bada.

Bada has been announced by Samsung as new open mobile platform. It comes with a new SDK so one assumes that it’s a brand new Linux-based stack designed to get the best out of Samsung phones which is kind of weird because Samsung make phones by putting components together just like everyone else. Unless they’re planning on using  Hummingbird on a completely new Samsung hardware platform that is.

Splitting up application developers into ever smaller groups isn’t really going to help anyone unless there’s some sort of compatibility going on here. A small part of my brain wants to say ‘Moblin 2.1 for handhelds on Moorestown’ as the timeline matches but that’s a long-shot.

It’s another signal for Microsoft for sure, but also a signal that the application ecosystem is the way to grow interest in a consumer operating system.

Chippy, do you think it is a case of wanting to also own the App store that feeds into the operating system? If Samsung uses Android then they cant own and control the App store because its already out there and not under their control. Same with Win Mobile. By making their own operating system they create an environment where they now can profit from the store they will set up to feed it apps just like Apple enjoys.

yes everyone wants to get their revenue from their own OS, but for us consumers it’s only worse because we get less Apps at all systems, developers should concentrate on one specific OS, the best one, which will survive this OS fight.
I would like to see Android as a winner… it was a great time when we had that much Symbian and Win Mobile… they all got great apps
