Onkyo Windows 7 Slate Unboxing and Gallery

Posted on 19 December 2010, Last updated on 19 December 2010 by

We gave you a heads up a while back that we’d be getting our hands on one of Onkyo’s three capacitive Windows 7 Slates, and it’s finally here. Onkyo is a name that’s more commonly associated with audio equipment than computers in the US, but they’ve delivered a surprisingly sturdy slate that’s been made available here in the US thanks to Dynamism. We’ve got the top end slate on tap for some testing and you can expect the full review in the near future. Here’s a spec rundown:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Intel Atom N450 @ 1.66GHz
  • GMA 3150 graphics
  • 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen @ 1366 x 768
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 32GB SSD
  • mini-HDMI output
  • 1kg
  • 1.3MP webcam

We’ve got an unboxing and detailed gallery ready for your perusal:

How would you compare this to the HP Slate 500 or Viliv X70?

Too big. Just get a netbook.

  11. some_dude says:

Yup, that’s around the size when tablets become too awkward to use. Ergonomics seems to be ignored with all these large tablets coming out.

  12. JOE H says:

Have you used a 10″ slate? Because the ergonomics are just fine. They are actually a little small. I have been using a 12 inch slate since 2004. It works great – approximates an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper nicely.

Back to my first point – if you haven’t used the product, than you have no place asserting its usability.

  13. some_dude says:

I’ve used a 9.7 inch iPad and it’s too unwieldy for mobile use so I end up using it on a table or my lap. I then end up just using a netbook.

You shouldn’t assume things. I could assume things about you to make it look like I’m correcting something that never existed in the first place.

  14. fifo says:

I got an iPad too. I thought I’d use it a lot while out and about. Just too big. I hardly used it outside my house. I sold it to a friend and got an iPod Touch instead. It does the same thing. I take it with me all the time.

  15. jack v. says:

I had an Archos 9 tablet and that was too big. I thought I could use it while being mobile. I thought wrong. My arm got tired. I end up bending my neck down due to me gradually lowering the device over time. Of course, my neck ends up hurting. I’m basically forced to just prop it up against something on a table. I’d prop it up using my hand but it starts to cramp up. It’s true, tablets and ergonomics just don’t go together.

I’ve since replaced it with a netbook. Much better. Just like the tablet, I’m forced to use it on a table too but at least I have proper posture and won’t have long term hand, arm, neck, etc. damage.

  16. spitzer says:

With this tablet craze, we’ll also see a rise in wrist, hand and neck problems, haha. Someone should make a chart next year or how ever long it takes for these physical aillments take to show up.

  17. Rick says:

Agree with Joe, the ergonomics on a 10 inch slate are just fine. Typing this with my Tega v2 while watching TV.

  18. KidDoc says:

This is the same hardware as the ExoPC out of Canada. I’ve been using mine for about 3 weeks. A nice machine, though Windows 7 just isn’t optimized for tablet use.

  19. Paul Tissue says:

The screen is actually 11.6 inches.

This is the Pegatron built machine that is similar to the WeTab or ExoPC–but it does not have the improved memory, faster SSD or better viewing angle that the ExoPC has.

  20. Gearsguy says:

Actually there’s 2 versions. 2 10.1 inches, and the most expensive is 11.6

  21. Paul Tissue says:

The pictured model in the photos and the unboxing video is the 11.6 inch model.

  22. Brett Gilbertson says:

Had a play with the 11″ version of this on Wednesday (again under a different brand). Very impressed with the build quality and form factor. Only 2 drawbacks for me: Screen viewing angles weren’t as good as I would like, although not bad. No active digitizer pen.

Touch gestures in Win 7 are awesome though. Makes my iPad feel like a one button mouse.

If you just want a couch surfing tablet with a full browsing experience, you could not beat this ATM.
