This post is being written on Windows LiveWriter through the Pepperpad… Sort of.
OK. So I didn’t try to install XP yet but it just goes to show how flexible thin client architectures can be. This is a remote XP session via the RDP protocol. Better known as Remote Desktop. Under Linux theres a package called rdesktop which is what I’m using here.
Performance is obviously great as its a 2.4 Ghz device sitting at the other end sending just its screen updates to the Pepperpad. Although I probably couldn’t run a video remotely, there is no problem exporting the audio to the Pepperpad and the touchscreen works fine for mouse control. The thumbpad is much faster than an on-screen keyboard and for me, a left handed writer, its faster than handwriting recognition.
Don’t forget that this will probably work for Vista too!
The Pepperpad is getting better every day. I’ve even heard that the team is almost ready to beta test DUN And A2DP over Bluetooth. I’ve got Xvid steams running, the softsqueeze client (more about that tomorrow) and gaim working well. Skype installs and runs but i cant get the mic to work yet and in the next update of the Pepper software, theres likely to be library support for self-installing Open Office, Amarok and maybe, just maybe, MythTV frontend. Fun fun fun!

Now my next question was going to be Skype and Open Office, you just answered that! I been using the PepperPad desktop on my XP laptop and it works dang good except that I miss my Firefox and all its extensions (adblocker is one). Is there a way to get Firefox on the PepperPad?
By the way I emailed Jon Melamut at PepperPad about getting dialup to work and he sent me this:

Mr. Deloyd,
Thank you for your interest in the Pepper Pad 3. While I have not personally tried it the WiFyler appears to be the solution you are looking for. Both the WiFlyer and Pepper Pad 3 are available from Amazon.com. Regards, Jon

I think i mentioned this before. If you have a spare windows XP machine you can use dialup on that ans share the connection over a cheap usb wifi dongle
Check out the pepperpad forums. theres talk of firefox. it loads ok apparently.
