How-to: Origami Experience on unsupported devices

Posted on 26 February 2007, Last updated on 07 November 2019 by

Like other Fujitsu P1610 owners, after upgrading to Windows Vista I was disappointed that Origami Experience would not run. After a bit of surfing on the Internet I have found a solution. This will work on any computer, and it will be quick and painless, I promise. Read on…

Note: We updated the article with a way of obtaining the Orca Editor directly from Microsoft. It turns out the previous way was violating some terms. Sorry!

1. Get the Origami Experience installer from the Microsoft website.

2. Download and Install the ORCA Msi editor. To achieve this, first go to this Microsoft site , and download the SDK installer. Run it, and press the next button until you get to Installation Options. Once you are there, deselect everything except the Win32 Development Tools. Here is how you window should look:

The installer downloads the files over-the-air, so remember to keep your internet connection active. After its done, press finish.

Now open the start menu and select Computer on the right side to open a new window. Double-click Local Disk (C:)  (or wherever you chose to install the files) then select Program Files, then Microsoft SDKs, then Windows, then v6.0, then Bin. In the folder find a file titled  ‘Orca’.

Double-click it to install the Orca Msi Editor.

Complete the installation and close the window from which you opened the installer.

3. Open the prgram from the Star Menu (by clicking the windows “orb”) and then open the OrigamiExperience installer from inside the program by going to File>Open…

4. Now from the left side of the window select InstallExecuteSequence.

5. Now from the right section of the window select the LaunchConditions row, and then press the delete key on your keyboard. Answer yes to the dialog box that pops up.

6. Next on the left side of the window select InstallUISequence.

7. Now it’s time to select the LaunchConditions row on the right side of the window and press the delete key and then select yes on the dialog box.

8. Now save the file by going to File>Save or pressing the Save icon (the floppy disk) and close the editor.

9. Navigate to the folder where your OrigamiExperience installer is and run it. Let the installer do it’s thing and wait for it to finish (it may take a while).

10. Your start (orb?) menu should now have a new folder and inside it Sudoku, Touch Settings and Origami Experience. All of them should work fine. Here’s OE on the P1610:

It gets even better when you change the screen resolution in the Intel Graphics Media App – set the display to 800×600 and in the Aspect ration settings select Full Screen (No Border).

Voila! You’re done!

Another great extra is the bundled Sudoku app, which works great without switching resolutions.

To sum it up, it is unfortunate that Microsoft decided to lock its excellent piece of software to devices with screens 7” or smaller, as many of us are barely outside of that category – not only the P1610s but also other devices like CarPCs. Enjoy your Origami Experience Pack!
