Q1 Ultra HSDPA ‘Baron’ now available in Germany

Posted on 21 November 2007

Image6It’s got the great screen, the great battery life, good looks and now its got HSDPA. Its configured with Windows XP too! Its the UMPC i’d buy if I could only choose one all-round UMPC device. The Tablet Store in Munich, Germany mailed me to let me know that the Q1 Ultra HSDPA is shipping now.

Its priced at 1399 which is 200 Euros more than the standard Q1 Ultra Vista. I asked about the fingerprint reader and no, it hasn’t got one which I find a bit strange considering the competition it will get from the HTC Shift.

Free mobile web browsing on the Kindle.

Posted on 21 November 2007

Now I’m interested. Not so much in the Kindle device itself but in the groundbreaking way that Amazon have set up this seamless, all-costs-included ‘experimental’ web browsing service over EVDO in the Kindle. It’s not a first as PocketSurfer do it with their Pocketsurfer 2 device but because this is a device getting a lot of attention, it might raise the question of ‘why do I have to pay for basic Internet on my mobile phone.’ Rob Bushway has just done an unboxing video of the Kindle. In Part 2 […]

OQO Holiday Special (u.S. Only)

Posted on 21 November 2007

Image2OQO have done it again!

No I don’t mean a great offer, I mean that they’ve sent me a US-only promotional email with a link that redirects back to an international web site so I can’t bring you any more info.

Silly!

I can’t even paste the link here because its a link that redirects through a strange URL from an unknown 3rd party. I assume some marketing company will track my response from the unique URL in the email (which could be fun to play with here!) but then again, it could be a phishing email. I don’t know!

If someone has the real link, let me know and i’ll paste it in.

Thanks kumrsps, Dynamism do indeed have the offer. Its real! Details on their OQO pricing page.

Packard Bell easynote XS video review

Posted on 21 November 2007

If you want a no-frills, good value second PC for the home, car or holiday, the Packard Bell Easynote XS could be for you. This video review should help you choose as it shows the device, its ports, the keyboard and a few applications. Its certainly good value for money if you can get hold of one in either Holland or the UK. Its also due to be launched in other areas and will appear in a slightly different finish in the US and Asia as the Everex CE.

The main issues with the device are the tiny mouse pad, the less-than-attractive style and the competition it will get from the ASUS Eee PC but it’s got a nice bright screen, a good keyboard and up to 4 hours battery life. (2.5 hours Wifi-on working life.) I’ve written more about the device here in my first impressions article.

eBook reader hands-on. 7 years too late.

Posted on 20 November 2007

This has nothing to do with the Amazon Kindle eBook reader. Really. It’s just a co-incidence that I got my first look at an eBook reader at the weekend just minutes after playing with an iPhone for the first time. Did anyone here have one of these ROcket eBook readers? How was it and what do you think of the new Kindle? HQ version on my Blip.TV channel. ASUS EEe. Missing PCI express mini connector.

Posted on 20 November 2007

Image2 This is going to come as a bit of a shock to those that were hoping for 3G, GPS, Bluetooth and storage upgrades (that’s about 1% of the target market then!!!) The Mini PCI-Express connector is missing on some recently received devices. That must costs ASUS next-to-nothing in parts and fractions of a dollar in labour but over hundreds of thousands of devices, it would make a nice end-of-year bonus for someone! I don’t like it though. Lets hope its just a Friday afternoon batch.

Seen on the Black Eee PC, reported on Eee user forums and blogged by JKKMobile.

Interview with OQO at the UMPC open day in Rotterdam.

Posted on 19 November 2007

While I was in Rotterdam I was fortunate enough to meet Martin Day, the director of international channels for OQO. He’s the man responsible for rolling out the E2. I managed to corner him for 5 minutes to ask him some questions. I don’t know about you but the question of HSDPA in the OQO sure sounds like its being addressed! Thanks to Martin for his time. Here’s the video (HQ version on Blip TV)

More information on the OQO E2 here.

Thanks to UMPCShop in Rotterdam for hosting this and thanks to the distributors who were showing their UMPCs. This needs to happen more often and I’m more than happy to come along, talk UMPCs and make videos for potential customers on the portal.
