AMD in the Netbook game with a new platform?

Posted on 03 June 2008, Last updated on 11 November 2019 by

The AMD Geode LX has been seem in mobile devices for at least two years but they haven’t had anything new since they upgraded the LX800 to the 900 last year but it now looks like they have something…

This mininote by Malata, reported by Aving [translation link] is said to be using a "saemteuron" which I assume is a bad translation of Turion or Sempron. Hard to tell. The GPU is said to be an RS690. We’re trying to work out what’s going on here. It could be a new ultra low power Griffin-based platform.

Thanks JKK.

Update: JKK found a bit more info.

    Anything

    Oops, sorry about that,

Anything AMD has come up with is going to be very last minute. Sort of like the McCaslin platform of Intel. The last we heard of AMD was them saying that they were not planning anything portable and that was just a year ago. I’m not surprised they are trying something new with the EEE success but it will not be tailor made like Atom and therefore likely not as battery friendly or cheap, on the plus side it might have better performance.

Here is a link to Aving’s USA website

    http://aving.net/usa/news/default.asp?mode=read&c_num=88242&C_Code=02&SP_Num=175

They show a number of netbooks by HP, Asus, Acer and Fujitsu. they call it Puma which is a Turion Ultra. Which went by the name of Griffin in the past.
They also state it is an AMD 780.

AMD has like 3 years longer experience then Intel in doing fanless super low power X86 processors. So I expect the AMD Turion Ultra to perform at least as good in terms of performance per power consumption as the Intel Atom, if not better.

These AMD Turion Ultra netbooks by Acer, Asus, HP and Fujitsu-Siemens shown by AVing though seem to have bigger screens and bigger form factors then the latest bunch of Atom based 7-10″ screen netbooks.

Re: “saemteuron”… I read the original Korean page and I think the AMD processor (marketing) name is “Samtron”. Not sure what it is based on.

  6. icura says:

Yes, that is a Korean romanisation of samtron.

sounds like samtron. The ‘eu’ is just a filler so that two constanants can be joined in a non korean way.

It’s used often for forign words. ‘ea’ is the e sound, but stligtly more ‘a’ sounding, not that Koreans even bother to pronouince the difference. Just think of it as ‘e’ and you are close enough.

That won’t compete against Atom, at least not power wise. Turion Ultra is the new AMD Puma platform which on the higher end will go against Centrino 2 “Montevina”. Turion Ultra is Athlon 64 X2 with just some low power features and Hypertransport 3 added in. As you’d know, its about as low power as Core 2 Duo is.

I think that “Semptron” is just very badly published. Its probably a mobile Sempron based on Turion Ultra.

AMD has no advantage of “experience” over Intel in low power processors. Their mobile segment has never lagged back against AMD based laptops. Advantage of process technology that Intel has shows especially against low power parts.
