With over 3 million page views on the product database over the last 16 months, there’s got to be some interesting stats in there…

Top 5 UMPCs.
  • HTC Shift -  No surprise. This was one of the most popular UMPCs due to its ground-breaking design and early news in March 2007. I’m not sure that it sold as well as it could have done due to the poor battery life. Many readers. like myself, will be hoping for a more efficient Atom-based refresh.
  • HP 2133 MiniNote – We broke the news that the HP would be based on a VIA processor which brought a lot of traffic. Despite the challenges from the other netbooks, people still love the design. My guess is that it is a better product than the HTC Shift in terms of sales and profit and if they dropped the price and put ‘Nano’ in there, it would pick up even more interest.
  • Eee PC 701 – The first of the Netbooks. Prices for this are about 25% below its introductory price which means it’s still getting a lot of views.
  • Fujitsu Lifebook U1010 – One of the 2nd-gen UMPCs. A real UMPC! It’s tiny clamshell design secured interest. Appeared as the U810 in the U.S. but it was the U1010 version that was first out of the door.
  • MSI Wind. Despite our scoop on the first ever Acer Aspire One images, the MSI Wind has turned out to be more popular here. Design, design design?

Bubbling under: Acer Aspire One, Eee PC 900, Gigabyte U60.

Its clear that the netbook-style devices are the most popular. The daily top-5 nearly always consists of netbooks and that’s despite my continued effort to focus on Ultra Mobile devices!

As for MIDs, they have a way to go before they reach the top 5. The Gigabyte M528 leads in position 18 with LG Xnote close behind. That’s one I really want to test. (Calling all HP reps!)

In the lead for brands is, of course, ASUS, who have 16 different sub 10" models. I don’t see that changing much at all over the next 16 months.

Notes: As you’re probably aware, product page views are largely affected by our news here on UMPCPortal.

Tiny PCs like OQO and Everun will never be popular until a revolution on the input and output interface. Smartphones had had the same problem until Apple figured out how to make a touchscreen fun to use including typing.

I predict Apple will make a large version of iPhone, then UMPC and MID will be real. Until then, only hardcore freaks like me would buy an OQO.

How about doing this at the beginning of each month for the previous month. That would provide a much more accurate picture of which products are “currently” hot. What was hot 16 months ago may be totally irrelevant today.

The 7-day rolling charts are always in the product page. Id really like to be able to pump out more stats, automated, but i need time that i just have not got :(

aaaah… the HTC Shift; my all-time favorite is #1.

I’m waiting for the HTC Shift with Atom… would make it simply incredible.

  7. Vakeros says:

The HTC Shift had us all drooling… until we got by negative after negative. A neutered WM6, a below par resolution for the size of screen and the below par battery life. If they would have allowed Voice calling (as they had bothered to use a phone chip, then that might have saved it – but I’m also waiting for Rev2.
