OQO Model 2+ screen outdoor visibility

Posted on 19 January 2009, Last updated on 11 November 2019 by

It’s overcast here at Six Flags Magic Mountain and based on what the Model 2+’s OLED touchscreen looks like at full brightness right now, a blue sky won’t be the only thing that will be hard to see today.

There’s a lot of glare, which I imagine would only be worse if the sun could actually cut through the clouds today, and visibility in general is just poor. The device may not have been designed with outdoor use in mind, of course, but how mobile can you be without stepping outside?

That’s just what I’ve been saying for years! The only device I have that’s usable outdoors is my Nokia E90. Maybe the lack of touchscreen has something to do with it?
Someone from OQO actually said that they no longer need to offer a special sunlight readable screen because the OLED screen is so good outdoors. Obviously someone was telling tall tails!

I estimate the brightness to be pretty high but maybe there’s something about OLED that makes it suffer in daylight.?

I was looking for news of Pixel Qi screens (sunlight readable, 5 fold increase in battery life, lower prices and touchscreen), to show up on some devices at CES.

This Mid Moves OQO device obviously would benefit from both the sunlight readable screen and the lower power that Pixel QI is claiming on their site (longer battery use times).

Looks like OLED screens are still plagued with sunlight visibility problems. That is a major flaw with the technology which I don’t think they’ll solve anytime soon.

Meh, give me a transreflective LCD screen anyday. My iPod Touch and Nokia 6220c both have sunlight readable screens but still look pretty good indoors.
