Toshiba TG01 Snapdragon smartphone, MID, whatever.

Toschiba TG01Maybe 50% of people will be calling this a MID?

News is breaking about a new 4.1 inch smartphone (same screen size and res as the Nokia N810) that will be running on the Snapdragon platform from Qualcomm.

It’s another cross-over between MIDs and smartphones and I don’t care what anyone wants to call it. If it performs well as a browser (Its running Windows Mobile 6.1 so Opera Mobile 9.5, Fennec and other options could work well on this) then it’s well worth considering.

We’re tracking news from a press events (PocketLint, ElectrigPig) but in the meantime, check out this presentation video from MegaWhat.tv

launch in summer? alright…win mo? noright…ok, might be a nice device, i just can’t get a hold on that OS…

  3. Marc G says:

Looks interesting, although Toshiba has released several high res Windows Mobile devices that have looked great on paper and failed to deliver in the real world….

  4. Chippy says:

The platform should be powerful enough for web. The screen size is good. Only keyboard is missing. I bet battery life is going to be a problem though.
I cant see anything more than a 4wh battery fitting into it giving 3hrs top as an active MID.

  5. Sam says:

    Shame it’s running Windows Mobile.

  6. Chippy says:

I could probably ignore that if i have a good browser option. It would be better than Moblin is right now and might have an upgrade path to 6.5 or even 7.

This is really the hardware than opera 9.5 mobile and Fenned was waiting for.

  7. fab says:

Steve? are you serious? how much tabbed browsing with javascript etc can you do on those browsers? and just for opera 9.5 you’re willing to pay a fortune, because that toshiba – which is not a good choice for winmo as experiences of others show – won’t be exactly cheap.

  8. admin says:

I have no idea what the price will be so I cant comment on that and for me, no, Opera 9.5 isnt a solution. Fennec might be though.
I’m not saying this is going to the top of my list, just that it’s worth keeping an eye on. The most powerful large-screen smartphone yet.

I’ve been using WinMobile since 2004 on my iPaq 4700, which even NOW is my main handheld unit!

There’s nothing seriously wrong with it, and there is a vast library of great software that runs on WinMo that trumps anything available for the iPhone or any Nokia product. From Coreplayer to iLauncher to Resco Explorer to…. yes, Opera 9.5.

I’d buy this in a heartbeat. It’s what I’ve been waiting for to replace my iPaq 4700 (the 4700’s successor, iPaq 210, was actually an inferior product, though slightly more powerful).

Finally. A WinMo device with a high-speed ARMv7 CPU. Hopefully we’ll see more ARMv7 devices from other manufacturers like HTC, Samsung and HP this year.

Oh yeah, and gimme a 3.5mm audio jack please!

  11. yeye2 says:

another qualcomm device?, NO THANKS. no!, to the crappy video playback, no to the “missing” 3d/2d drivers!. the performance of 4-5 years old device just now, great for nostalgics.

  12. TareX says:

Unless you’re Asian, you have no need for a resistive touchscreen.

Besides, when WM stutters on a 1 GHz processor, something is fundamentaly wrong with it. It’s also too big for a pocket, and the UI seems to be MILES behind webOS and Android.

you haven’t got a clue what your talking about , go and crawl back under your rock

  14. Vlad says:

The screen and device sizes are perfect. Few millimeters wider/longer, and it would not be usable as a phone. I like it and I’ll buy it (unless a decent rival will come out at that time). With such CPU and display res, browsing and video playback should be really fine. Some worries about battery life, but I’m ready to recharge it on a daily basis bearing in mind how it looks and what it offers.

Here is sumthing more abt this super device..
The Toshiba TG01 is the first device in the world to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform, which is powered by a 1GHz mobile CPU and hosts GSM, HSPDA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity all on one chipset. The CPU has dynamic speed control and Toshiba and Qualcomm claim it’ll go for a whole day without recharging. TG01 have the huge display – a 4.1-inch large touchscreen display has a WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels) and it’s certainly the biggest one we’ve seen on a GSM mobile phone. The Toshiba TG01 also packs unprecedented size for its hardware capabilities – it’s only 9.9 millimeters thick. The device is obviously quite wide and tall but that’s mostly because of the display as there are hardly any hardware buttons to take up place – even the receiver keys have become part of the user interface present throughout the whole UI. The connectivity section of the Toshiba TG01 includes HSPA and Wi-Fi plus a GPS receiver with A-GPS functionality. The internal storage is “only” 512 MB but you get a microSDHC card slot with support for up to 32GB. The TG01 also comes with support for DivX video, and finally, the Toshiba TG01 makes use of a built-in 3.2 megapixel camera.

    Toshiba? No.

    1) Given the deteriorating economy, I doubt this will ever actually come out.

    2) Toshiba has a spectacularly rotten rep with their past GENIO line of PDAs. I’m *still* mad over how my gorgeous 4″ screen died. A death *many other* GENIO owners experienced too.

    3) WinMob? I just can’t get excited over that at all.
