Viliv S7 Owner Report / Pics. No Showstoppers. Huge battery life/Weight ratio.

S7-2 We’ve waited a long long time to see a production Viliv S7. An early prototype was seen at CES in Jan 2008 and the re-design was seen over a year ago at IDF. Finally the production devices are moving out the door. At least in Hong Kong.

One early adopter in Hong Kong, ‘bad_one’, has been providing some updates in the forum. He’s also sent over some images so it’s time for the first end-user ‘proxy’ review of the Viliv S7 3G (1.3Ghz)

Notes:

  • Swivel mechanism good.
  • Voice calls possible.
  • SSD is SanDisk pSSD-P2 32GB (info from BIOS)
  • Boot time about 40 seconds including BIOS.
  • Speakers are loud
  • You Tube HD lags (Expected)
  • Glossy screen.
  • WLAN reception good.
  • Touchpad is ‘useful’ but ‘not outstanding’
  • Touchscreen is fast and responsive
  • No background noise from speakers (an issues with the X70 for some)
  • GPS included
  • In tablet mode the lid is not laying on the rubberfeed, so there is a gap from 1-2mmm, when you touch the display it goes back a little.
  • Touching the corners of the display is quit hard with fingers (i.e. close a windows.)
  • Battery capacity only shown in % [Very annoying Chippy]

CrystalDiskMark2.2 results (FAT32)

  • Seq: 59.72 35.22
  • 512: 59.44 2.068
  • 4K: 5.811 1.716

Note from Chippy: This is a reasonable score for an SSD. Not class-leading though.

CrystalMark

  • MARK: 22070
    ALU: 4725
    FPU: 3723
    MEM: 3753
    HDD: 7508
    GD1: 1838
    D2D: 234
    OGl: 288

Note from Chippy: Again, good scores. 3D results still in the ’embarrassing’ category. When will Intel ever give Menlow the attention it deserves in that department?

Other notes from bad_one.

Since the Device is so small, it is fun to work with keyboard, touchscreen and touchpad at the same time, I know it sounds strange but it is really convenient to work with.

The Box contents are: the VILIV S7, power supply, USB cable, and mini manual.
The video cable, bag, screen protector and USB to ETHERNET are part of a promotion here in HK (as far as I know).

Battery Eater Pro test at UMPCFever.

‧Battery Eater Pro, Classic mode (100% CUP loading)
‧50% Backlight
‧50% Voice (even there is no sound generated)
‧All wireless off

8 hours (483 min)

Based on that figure you can expect at least 6 hours of connected time and over 5hours of continuous browser work. [More S7 news from UMPCFever]

Summary.

So far there are no show stoppers and the battery life is huge considering this is includes a keyboard and weighs under 850gm. Anyone remember the HTC Shift? It had very similar capabilities and weighed almost exactly the same. The battery life on that was 2.5hrs, max! It looks like Viliv have done it again and conquered another section of the ultra mobile PC market. One caveat remains…US and EU pricing! We look forward to getting an S7 in our hands very very soon.

    Thank you for the information.

I have installed the XP-accceralerator on my viliv S7, not sure if this is the reason, the boot time of mine is just 22 seconds at most.

Something not very descent, when you click on the left click button while using the touch pad, the cursor ‘jumps’ from time to time, therefore i’d prefer the touch screen than the touch pad(at all sense).

Btw, I guess many of us would turn off some of the startup programs in order to speed up the device even more, notice that the CCleaner works perfectly with the device. Here’s a reminder, do not turn off the ‘viliv manager’ startup, or else the MENU and PIVOT buttons (next to the touch screen) won’t work.

Apart from the above, the viliv S7 works perfectly and is absolutely light weighted. To me, the device is even more handy than the vaio P, mainly due to the touch capability, long battery life, and I’m sure the screen size and resolution suit perfectly to most of us(even when I am not wearing my glasses). Keyboard is more than acceptable, not to mention the battery life, which is just brilliant.

Firefox has never been my favorite browser, I always prefer either opera or the google chrome, but the grab and drag add-on works too well on the touch screen, together with the hide caption bar and tiny menu add-ons, i’d recommend ff to the google chrome on the S7.

I have been using the S7 for nearly 2 weeks, and I would say this is one of my smartest decisions having the device with me.

    (Please excuse my typos, thanks!)

Elizabeth, could you post in this forum a screen shot of the utility to calibrate the touch screen? I need to see two tabs from that utility, the Gen and the settings.

Also, I would like to see one more screen shot of the Device Manager with the Mouse and HID Devices expanded.

    Thanks a lot.

  4. Elizabeth says:

Hi ctitanic, sure I can, not really sure if this’s what you meant, but here’s the screenshot of the utility viliv uses– the JasTouch software(Jastec) to monitor the calibration of the touch screen.

And what do you mean by those two expanded?

  5. ctitanic says:

In case you don’t see it. I need something like this too.

    Thanks in advance…

  6. ctitanic says:

Another device from Viliv that is not Windows Touch Complaint!

  7. chippy says:

Yeah. I’m in discussion with Viliv about this. Encouraging them to get it fixed for Win7 release.

  8. ctitanic says:

Steve, so then there is a show stopper. The device is not Windows Touch Complaint! ;-) The same with the X70 and the new Archos 9 coming soon.

  9. ctitanic says:

Opps, I said complaint when I was meaining to say Compliance. Windows Touch Compliance!

  10. ctitanic says:

One more thing, you may check the article I posted in your forum about the whole situation, there are two possible fixes. Either Viliv change the hardware design using the Serial Interface (The same one used in the Amtek T700) or they put pressure on EETI to create a wrapper to handle the PS/2 has a HID Device. This last option seems to me harder because Samsung was on that situation back in 2007 with it’s Samsung Q1 and they justs ended changing the interface and EETI never added HID Support even when they released a beta to me for the Q1.

  11. ctitanic says:

Thanks Elizabeth, it’s using a EETI made touch screen. Now, could you post what is in the Device Manager under Mouse and HID Devices.

    Something like this

  12. Elizabeth says:

The XP on my S7 is in Chinese, but I’m sure you know icons well, and unless i’m blind, I can’t find the HID…

  13. ctitanic says:

Elizabeth, You have helped me a lot. There is not any HID Compliant Device listed in your device manager. That means this device is not Windows Touch Compliant. If you install Windows 7, the TIP will not work properly and you will be missing all the Touch Screen Features currently present in Windows 7.

  14. Michael says:

Is there any new (exact) information when this device is hitting at least the US market?
I wrote dynamism an email about a weeek ago and they said that they are in negotiation with Viliv and they think in a few weeks/months they can offer it… Form Viliv itself I dind’t even get an answear…
