Don’t forget the Tablets. (46 of them!)

Posted on 26 January 2010, Last updated on 26 January 2010 by

If the ‘iPad’ is launched tomorrow there’s one thing that’s certain to happen. As senior editors prepare their copy and aim to boost SEO value by focusing on the current keyword trends, the many tablets that already exist in the market will be completely overlooked. Some tech journalists will remember that something tablet-like existed back in 2006 and mark it as a failed category but of course, we know different.

The number of tablet devices in the market has grown considerably in the last 12 months and we’re now at the point where we have 46 of them fully-specified in the database with screen sizes of 4.8 to 10 inches.

Prices range from $200 to over $1000 with processors based on RISC and X86, operating systems based on Windows and Linux and battery life ranging from 2-10 hours. Our favorite so far The Viliv X70. What’s yours?

Q1 Ultra Premium – but then I’m looking for power (primarily) as well as portability.

If I wasn’t it would be waaaaaaay to clunky.

The Crunchpad should be moved from “Expected” to “Failed” though, or “Released under different name”. Somewhat like that.

    Changed to ‘end of life.’
    Thx

My favorite, I am still hanging between Viliv and Archos 9. One have looks and practical navigation other have pretty good power under the hood.

I don’t think this ‘iPad’ or ‘iTablet’ will come much other than 2ghz with some fancy UI and slick look. Only a couple of days left to check that.

This list is missing one thing, WACOM digitizer. Does it come with it, is it active/passive display.

I need to know which tablet suites me for art/design purposes.

Viliv needs to refresh their X70. Drop an optical mouse on that baby, and I will buy it.

Is there a way to sort these by price? I’d really like to know which one (ones?) cost $200.

  15. Chippy says:

That’s something we’ve been trying to do for years but there’s no simple way to get global (or at least top5 country) coverage without it being too much work for us or ending up like a price comparison engine where the lowest prices are just there as adverts with ‘no stock’ behind them. Sorry! If we find a way, we’ll do it as soon as we can.

    Regards and thx for feedback.

  16. Chad W Smith says:

Ok – but could you tell me which one (ones?) are $200 as mentioned in the article?

  17. chippy says:

The SmartQ7 starts at $200. W1060 $170 even. The Archos 5 is about $240 and there are a bunch of them that I dont have in the database yet. Mainly cheap ARM11 stuff though so don’t get too excited!

Wirelession (.com) have some interesting options.

  18. Peter Kung says:

Viliv X70 is still the best in terms of options and battery.

  19. me says:

Viliv S5, its practical and makes a great PMP. Full computer and a PMP. Its damn near imposible to beat unless you add a webcam and voice/data 3G to it.

  20. Marauderz says:

ViliV S5 lacks a proper touchscreen driver, making it crippled if you use Windows 7.

  21. HG says:

I think Viliv has released Windows 7 touch drivers last month.
