The Velocity Micro VMUltraDrive looks like the perfect desktop companion for your Ultrabook.
If you’re using an Ultrabook on the desk I advise taking a look at your setup. How many cables are you pugging in and out each day? Do you have two 1080p screens for the best productivity and have you got an external HDD linked-up for the new Windows 8 feature – File History? This combi HDD/DVD and USB3.0 hub could really help with that modular desktop setup.
The Velocity VMUltra Drive has clearly been built for the Ultrabook market where port numbers and types can be fairly low and DVD drives are a rarity. This $199 accessory adds 500GB of storage, 2xUSB3.0 ports and USB2 port, full-size SD card (with SDXC support) and a USB DVD writer all in one neat package. Add your USB Gig-E USB dongle and DisplayLink adaptor and you’re good to go with a full 2x1080p desktop setup.
Unplug and drop it into your suitcase and you’ll be setup for all those hotel-room video, audio and DVD needs.
It seems rather expensive though. For $199 we would have liked to see a Gig-E port or at least a 1TB drive but as this is the RRP, expect to see some discounts on the net-street.
Performance on the drive isn’t available and although the unit is USB bus powered we’d be surprised if DVD Writing, a USB stick and HDD usage worked simultaneously. A PSU is supplied however.
Now all we need is for a VMUltra to be combined with a Toshiba Dynadock so that we’ve got a nice all-in-one solution. Anyone?
