Google Vids – Finally there’s a cloud editing solution that fits ultra-mobile users

I’m impressed. Google Vids cloud-based 4K video editing on a Chromebook works. Drive and Photos integrates seamlessly. While there are other cloud-based solutions, if you’re a Google user, this is a no-brainer for ultra-mobility.

First, the video. Recorded in 4K/30 with a couple of shots directly from my Pixel 6. Everything was edited on the Lenovo Duet 11 Gen 9. I had spent a few hours previously testing the app but i am, by no means, an expert on Google Vids.

This article isn’t a how-to. I’m not in a position to do that yet. This is here to encourage you, if you’re an ultra mobile computing fan, to test this out. If you’re an Android user, even better because the Photos workflow is really smooth. Have two Android phones with good quality cameras, you’re in an even better position.

The output quality is highly compressed but i’m sure it won’t take Google long to implement higher quality rendering or even direct-to-YouTube rendering at even higher quality and to keep you locked into their ecosystem.

Kit list:

  • Lenovo Duet 11 Gen 9 Chromebook. This one
  • Lumix G7 micro-four-thirds camera (over 10 years old)
  • Rode Videomarket kit microphone (also, old)
  • USB-C SD card reader

That’s it!

I’m talking about this on Bluesky if you fancy commenting there.
