I’m surprised that this has happened. The Fujitsu U772 has been outed in the flesh in a ‘pre-production’ review. We got hands-on back at CeBIT when the model name was unknown and we enjoyed one of the thinnest, best-looking Ultrabooks so far. 15.9mm and amazingly small for a 14” laptop.
Is it the incredibly thin bezel that makes it look so modern and tasty or is the overall chic look and ultra-thin lines?
I call the Samsung XE700 an Ultraslate. It’s effectively an Ultrabook in a tablet form factor and it comes with a Bluetooth keyboard and a docking station. It’s one of the most flexible, usable tablets I’ve seen in a long time and it’s also a design milestone. This is the first time I’ve seen desktop-class computing in under 1KG of tablet with a decent (for tablet PCs) battery life. It’s a 2011 design too which means with Ivy Bridge, those designs can move forward with smaller, lighter form facts and/or longer battery life. Once you’ve got all the electronics in the screen you can do some very cool designs including ones with detachable keyboards. Intel CFO Stacy Smith reveals in a video by The Street (below) that he’s seen such a design. We’re wondering if it’s this Compal design that we saw at CES.
“I have hands on for all the Sony Ultrabooks!” said the email from fellow Germany-based blogger Balazs Gal of Techfokus. Checking out his YouTube channel reveals three videos. That’s the Vaio T13, the Vaio T11 and a comparison video. Balazs also got confirmation, from an official representative, that there’s an Ivy Bridge version. Yes, the one we spotted!
I’ll link you to the news articles here. (Translations: T13 and T11) Check them out for a good set of pics. The videos are embedded below.
Update: The Sony T13 and T11 have the Intel HM77 chipset with integrated USB3.0 and other new features. The more interesting part of that is that it’s the latest chipset and it supports Ivy Bridge; Another confirmation that Sony are planning to right across the low-to high-end with this product. High-end versions with 512GB SSD and an Ivy Bridge Core i7 will be well over $2000, for certain but a $700 (or thereabouts) stating price brings it to the masses. Again, Ultrabooks proving they have a high dynamic range of use cases.
Pre-ordering for the Sony Vaio T Series has started with two retailers in Germany offering the base 11.6” version and quoting availability in two weeks. Pricing is as we reported earlier this week. Over at the Sony Germany web site, however, there’s some new information to be had on spec options. As I was writing this article an Ivy Bridge model popped up right in front of me. I some specs changing as I refresh so someone’s obviously working on it right now but that Ivy Bridge model seems fairly clear to me.
Here are the options you’ll currently find on the Sony.de website:
We’re confused. Trying to get a hold on the models numbers, specifications and availability of the new Samsung Series 9 in just the USA, UK and Germany is driving us crazy and adding to the confusion today is news via Engadget that Samsung UK have listed an Ivy Bridge version of the gorgeous Series 9 2012. There’s also an Ivy Bridge version of the 13.3” version appearing in Austria. The 900X3C with 4GB of RAM and the Ivy Bridge i5-3317UM is showing for €1253 with an expected availability of 21 May. We don’t believe any Ivy-Bridge Ultrabook will ship before June but remember that the Series 5 is already launched and, importantly, not an Ultrabook!
Here’s an overview of the Samsung Series 9 models as far as we can work it out. The two new models are highlighted.
The good people over at Ultrabook-info.de have spotted a new version of the Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook, the 530U3C-A02. It’s appearing in German price comparison engines with Ivy Bridge specifications and is expected to be an update to the existing Series 5 models available in June. Expect price drops on the current Samsung Series 5 Ultrabooks very soon!
Computex, Taiwan, is one of the most important trade shows for the laptop market and this year it coincides with the availability of low-power Ivy Bridge CPUs for Ultrabooks so it makes sense that Intel and their customers seize the moment to launch the 2nd Generation of Ultrabooks.
In an article at Techworld.com, Scott Pendrey, desktop product manager at Intel, gives us the information that “the first ultrabooks featuring Ivy Bridge processors will come to market on 5 June, with more to follow throughout 2012.”
Yesterday (12th April in Beijing) Kirk Skaugen spent 53 minutes on stage at the IDF Beijing 2012 conference. Most of that time was spent talking around Ultrabooks.
You’ll see the Hybrid Ultrabook ‘Letexo’ , graphics, media and touch demonstrations, Windows 8, security, VPro and more.
