Dell’s XPS 13 has been available for a while and has been well received but a couple of features were not as well liked as others. Next week an updated version of the Ultrabook will be available which addresses one of the major perceived shortcomings and adds a few other related improvements as well.

Velocity Micro has recently introduced a new range of Ultrabooks under the NoteMagix branding with some interesting features including the choice of Ivy Bridge core i3-i7 processors, optical drive, promise of no bloatware, US based tech support and a choice of operating systems.

The folks at mobilegeeks.com have a hands on video of the recently re-announced Gigabyte U2142 Convertible Ultrabook. Its an 11.6 inch 1366×768 device that comes with a swivel screen similar to the Lenovo Thinkpad Twist and features a whole host of ports for excellent connectivity and also has storage options up to 1TB HDD or 256GB SSD. At CES 2013 last week, Gigabyte re-announced the U2142 ‘Masterclass’ Ultrabook, a swiveling touchscreen unit based on Ivy Bridge which we heard about back in October. The company is upgrading the powerful U2442 gaming Ultrabook with a new Nvidia GPU and touchscreen.

At CES Intel is showing off their latest reference design for next-generation Ultrabooks with their next-gen CPU, Haswell. If you’ve been following Intel for any amount of time, you’ll know that they love reference designs. Reference designs package the company’s latest tech into a concept machine that won’t ever make it to market, but serves to show what is possible with their latest platform. Their latest Ultrabook reference design has a detachable screen which can be used as a tablet.

2012 has been an exciting year for the Ultrabook. With the launch of Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors, and a little help from Windows 8, Ultrabooks gained massive momentum. There’s now Ultrabook offerings from every top PC manufacturer, and even many from second-tier manufacturers. Some, like Asus, have more than 10 Ultrabook models available!
