Japanese Fujitsu U2010/U820 gets 2GHz Atom CPU

fujitsu u The Japanese version of the Fujitsu U2010/U820 has gotten a little bump in processing power thanks to a 2GHz Atom CPU. Chippy used a variant of the Fujitsu U [Portal page] to great success on a trip recently and really seemed to enjoy the device. A slight bump in processing power onto a device that Chippy describes as, “…HQ from the screen to the well thought-out control buttons and excellent efficiency inch, can’t be a bad thing. The 2GHz variant of the Fujitsu U has the catchy name of ‘FMVLUC50N’ and isn’t yet official in other parts of the world, but you can get it through importers like Conics. I wander if Fujitsu would be nice enough to bump up a RAM to at least 2GB.

This is another one (well, the American version anyway) that I wouldn’t mind testing with Mer…

Since my friend has a Windows XP version of Acer Aspire One with a high capacity battery I’ll compare that to the U820.

    Acer Aspire One

    Weight 950g
    Size (w/h/d mm) 248/170/29 mm

    Fujitsu U820

    Weight 708g
    Size (w/h/d mm) 171/152/32 mm

Tell me, is the Fujitsu U820 a mini-Netbook or a Acer Aspire One a large UMPC? The exact problem of the U820 is that its really not that portable compared to the Aspire One. Sure its a bit smaller, a bit lighter. Did I mention the greater than 2x price difference?

U820 is the middle-grounder that never sells. If you go MID level with the Viliv S5 or UMID M1, at least it’ll fit in your pocket and cost almost half the price of the U820. If it wasn’t for the 512MB of RAM or the pathetically small SSD, UMID would have been a good option. However, at least IMO, that’s too big of a sacrifice for a keyboard that isn’t fully substitutable for a full sized one.

I guess taste differs, to the me the 25%(!) less weight of the U820 is a great advantage, not to mention the swivel screen.

I was actually having U820 in consideration for purchase, but then the MIDs from Korea came, the S5 and the UMID. Slightly slower for almost the half price and more portability is worth it. Again, U820 is more portable than a Netbook, but definitely not worth the 2-3x price difference.
