JKK, Sascha and I are extremely proud to announce that we’ll be doing our first ever live-audience MeetMobility podcast recording (and hopefully live broadcast) at CES 2010 on Friday Jan 8th at 2pm Thanks to Runcore, creators of excellent SSD solutions (I think we all have at least one Runcore–enabled device now) we’ve got a place, a time and an internet connection. With a sack full of news to talk [...]

If you’re a regular to UMPCPortal you’re probably a fan of mobile computing. Maybe you’re interested in mobile computing with a desktop operating system. And why not! You get full functionality on a PC architecture which gives you the ability to do exactly what you do, the way you do it on the desk, just a little slower, with different input methods and for shorter periods of time, while mobile! [...]

CES 2010 is nearly here and although it’s been a quiet few days for news over Christmas, the planning continues behind-the-scenes and I expect quite a few ‘leaks’ over the next week. In this post I’ve put together a list of topics that I think will form the core of Intel’s mobile computing related activities at CES. Remember that I’m only focusing on handheld, internet and netbook computing so that’s [...]

The N450 is the new Intel Atom-based chip that will be used for ‘Pineview’ netbooks in 2010. Many of you have heard about the new ‘leaked’ netbooks over the last few weeks and although it’s focused at netbooks, we think there is some scope for some relatively powerful UMPC designs using the N400-series silicon. To that end, we’ve been following the news closely. The N450 integrates the GPU and CPU [...]

Here’s the weekly rundown of items that we posted to the middle column on UMPCPortal, our ‘Other News’ section. It’s all good UMPC and MID-related stuff that, in most cases, we didn’t write about as a main news item. Shared ICD Ultra Android tablet hands-on. Shared Dell updates Inspiron Mini 10 with Intel Atom Pine Trail platform. Posted ICD Ultra Tablet. Posted ICD Ultra Hands-On by Engadget. Shared 2 videos. [...]

There are two interesting clamshell MIDs on the horizon and we expect both of them to launch at CES. Expect hands-on with both of these at CES 2010.

The Archos 9 has been with us for about 5 days now and we’re due to send it back to Mobilx in a few days so we thought we better get an early review out to you all. This isn’t an in-depth review but it’s everything we’ve learnt from the live session and time we’ve had with it since unboxing. For full specifications, check out the Archos 9 information page [...]

In a significant architechtural move away from X86, the 2011 generation of the XO (One Laptop Per Child Project) will move from a VIA C7 CPU to a Marvell design based on ARM cores.

We’ve just been invited to see the Viliv N5 at CES.
4.8”, 1024×600, Clamshell design, 3G, Wifi, GPS and we can probably expect Viliv’s usual high quality build and battery life. The UMID M2 has a competitor!

As I wind down my posts for a short break over the next days (but wind up my work to prepare for CES in the background!) I think it’s nice that I can round-up with some discussion about MIDs and PCs. It’s especially nice that the seed for this article comes from the VP of a company that hasn’t had much to do with UMPCs and MIDs of late. I tip my hat to any VP that publicly exposes their thoughts like this.

The ICT Ultra is so ‘Origami’ that it’s not funny. At least it’s not funny for Microsoft and Intel!

You’re going to see a lot of news about the new Intel netbook platform over the next few weeks and an incredible amount of hype through netbook-related PR as companies combine this new platform with Windows 7 and a CES launch to try and sell you a completely new netbook experience. In reality, not much changes.

Thanks very much to Mobilx.eu who have sent one of their first Archos 9 devices to us for a week of testing and hands-on. You’ll remember hearing about this earlier in the year and getting a launch at IDF in September but it’s taken a long time to reach the hands of end-users. There are a few early devices out there already but not many hands-on and unboxing videos. Here’s my contribution.
