Summer Breaks, Products Wait. Round-Up and Outlook Q3/Q4 2010. (Pt. 2 of 2)

Watchlist.

There are a number of products that we’re looking forward to further news on. The new Archos tablets (gen 8) are expected at the end of summer. If they build on the Archos 5 Internet Tablet in the correct way (capacitive screen, Google applications and market, 3G option) then they will be very interesting options. The ICD tablets have been in hiding for a while now. The Ultra (7 inch) Gemini (11.6 inch) and Vega (15 inch) have all been ‘outed’ but the company blog hasn’t been updated since last year. This is not the kind of presence you’d expect from a company that wants to launch its first three tablets. Notion Ink, on the other hand, seem to be very active and even announced that they’ve closed a round of funding that looks like it will take them into production. That’s probably what ICD are missing to be honest! Notion Ink have also written on their blog to say that they will be offering 2 types of display (indicating to me that the Pixel QI version might have been a little expensive for the average buyer) and that they will probably not launch until November. Like every tablet OED right now, they will be looking at carriers as a priority channel and that, unfortunately, is a very long process.

interpad Other devices to watch out for:

  • Viliv X10 (I’m hearing from multiple sources that Viliv are working hard on this and that it will happen.)
  • HP Slate Windows or WebOS They would be working on both
  • Eee PC tablets Not likely until 2011 in my opinion
  • Inbrics M1 It’s probably too late for that now. The slider Droid 2 will remove the need for it.
  • Neofonie WeTab It was supposed to have launched by now. Amazon.de say it will ship on the 2nd week in September.
  • Interpad Nvidia Tegra2 based 7 inch Android pad with capacitive screen. New in the database.

Is there anything else you’re watching? Add it in the comments and I’ll add it to my IFA tracking list.

Events

The UMPCPortal and Carrypad news desks are now fully back up to speed and we’ll be preparing for Septembers calendar of events that starts with IFA on the 3rd September. We’ll be there covering as much as we can on the floor and also hooking up with Sascha of Netbooknews. We’ll also be doing some presentations with Intel so keep an eye out for more details on that. I’ve never been to IFA before but every year I regret not going because there’s always some great product news. I think we’ll finally see some real product announcements with availability and prices. We also get to meet-up with a lot of European-based marketing and PR people which means we can talk about getting products for live review here at HQ.

Following IDF we have one of the most important events of the year. IDF Intel Developer Forum. Why is it so important? In the ultra mobile PC world of productivity and mobile desktop operating systems there is only one player and IDF gives us enough information to project at least 12 months into the future. This year is especially big for Intel as Atom seeds Oaktrail and Tunnel Creek for traditional PC and tablet systems and the brand new area of ‘always-on’ which the Moorestown platform will introduce. MeeGo and the AppUp products will also be big news and as we’re expecting product launches in Q4 and Q1 2011, we expect to see previews and some prototypes that might end up as products in 2011. I’m going as an ‘Intel Insider’ (travel paid by Intel) which will give me some extra access to the important people and products. IDF coverage starts on 12th Sept. Note: The equivalent from the ARM side of the fence, the ARM Techcon, is on on Nov 9-11th, a few days before the the MeeGo summit in Dublin on the 15th. I hope to attend both events.
