As the Ultrabook design philosophy reaches more of the mainstream laptop market it is becoming more and more difficult to spot new advances in laptop design. NEC makes it easy for us though by launching the sub 800-gram (1.76 pound) LaVie GZ. Energy and space-saving IGZO screen and mainboard means less layers to the laptop cake. There’s a trade-off though.
Sorry Gigabyte, before your ‘lightest notebook on Earth’ has become available, NEC have not only reduced the weight of their LaVie Z LZ750/HS, they’ve done it with a 13.3” screen. This is a stunning bit of engineering – just on weight alone.
The last time we reported on the NEC Lavie we had ‘official’ specs which have turned out to be slightly wrong in the weight department. NEC have succeeded in reducing the weight from an already impressive 999gm to a mind-blowing 875gm. How did they do it?
‘Shocking thinness and price” says the advertising for the new Lesance NB S3431 Ultrabook. While 19mm might not be a shock to anyone that reads Ultrabooknews, the price of $725 (59980 Yen) is pretty impressive.
Yes, this is a Japan-only model (although expect it to reach other countries under other brands – this looks like one of the first 2nd-tier OEM Ultrabooks to hit the market) and the specs are so-so when compared to other Ultrabooks but for the mainstream market this price is a good indicator.
