Asus has quietly made and official announcement about their upcoming S46 and S56 Ultrabook via press release saying that the S-series Ultrabooks “are the only products in their segment to achieve a true all-in approach to features”. We saw the S46 (14″) and S56 (15.6″) during Computex back in June, but strangely Asus made no official announcements regarding their availability or even existence; it seems they were preoccupied with the exciting TaiChi and Transformer Book. Given the announcement, expect to see the S46 and S56 on store shelves soon.

Sascha Pallenberg reacts exactly as we did when we first saw the Dell Inspiron 14z. Is it really an Ultrabook?
In terms of specs, it does appear to fit inside the Ultrabook definition and taking a view from the mainstream laptop world, it’s also fits quite nicely. Maybe we’re getting too used to thin and light devices already.

An ASUS-funded blog, Techinstyle.TV, uploaded a video to YouTube today about the ASUS S Series Ultrabooks. It looks like they might have uploaded it a day too early as there was no announcement at Computex today about S Series Ultrabooks! In fact, we can’t find anything about them anywhere. Floppy drives are dead and the computer industry seems to have its sights set on the CD drive as the next victim. The vast majority of Ultrabooks ship without an optical drive, and as someone now using an Ultrabook as my primary computer, I can tell you that I’m honestly no missing it. There seems to be little room, or little need, for an optical drive in an Ultrabook.
