Is is really that hard for a product designer to sit down and think about what sort of computing experience a product is going to provide a customer? Thanks in part to devices like the Joojoo [Portal page] and the iPad [Portal page], Slate mania is officially underway. Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon, and those that do — with Windows based devices — are going to fail in [...]

MSI, the maker of some fairly well regarded netbooks, is going to be bringing the “Wind Pad 100” Slate to market. The keyboardless 10” capacitive touch unit will be powered by the Atom Z530 CPU and will have HDMI out, presumably for 720p video output to an HDTV. The MSI product manager says that the MSI Wind Pad 100 will be available “later this year” for $499, according to Engadget. [...]

Our pal Jenn over at Pocketables.net already has her hands on the refreshed Sony Vaio P [Portal page]. Though the US Sony Style site doesn’t even have the new Vaio P for sale yet, Jenn has plenty of detailed images for your perusal. She’s also taken the older Sony VAIO P [Portal page] and put it face to face with the new one in a comparison photo-shoot.

Computex is one of the biggest and definitely the most important trade show of the year for mobile computing. Not only is it located in the heartland of notebook, netbook and mobile computer design and manufacture but it’s an event that I get additional access to through our friends at Intel. I’m part of the Intel Insider program which is covering my trip to Taipei and giving me some guidance [...]

Good work, Pocketables! The team over there have picked up two news items on the Viliv N5 today. Together, they give us a good indication that the product is ready for pre-sale. There are a lot of Intel-related rumors and unqualified information that fly about and one of my jobs is to mash all that up and try and work out what’s happening so that I can ‘skate to where the puck is going to be’ as Steve Jobs would say. This article is my best, educated, guess at what Intel’s ‘tablet’ silicon would be.

Brad at Liliputing has put up a first-look video of Meego 1.0 for netbooks. Clearly the UI is based on Meego as is still using clutter instead of Qt and there don’t seem to be many major changes apart from Chrome being used as the browser. Brad does report that it’s fast though As I write, i’m installing to an MSI Wind and will do some testing. I’ll also test [...]

The MeeGo core code 1.0 and Netbook User Experience builds have just been released. Obviously I’m downloading it as I write this and i’ll be reporting on it as soon as I can (lots happening this evening though. I might have to leave it until Thursday.) One of the big changes is that there’s a version available that includes Chrome. Chrome has been chosen as the default browser for MeeGo [...]

In a Webcast (still ongoing) by Intel today, Mooly Eden has just presented Intel’s processor range for ultra-thin laptops. Based on Nehalem, products will include Intel Turbo technology that will allow cores to run up to thermal limits based on live measurements. The U3400 (1Ghz Celeron) , U5400 (1.2Ghz Pentium) could be interesting for high-end UMPCs although Mooly talked about 17W TDP in his presentation. Remember that the parts are [...]

Once again, it looks like my trusty Gigabyte Touchnote, my Canon S2IS and my N82 will form the hub of my mobile computing gear at Computex this year. Despite great advances in technology, I’m the mobile-tech-blogger with the old kit and the reason is – process. See previous editions of my mobile reporting kit here. I’ve been using these devices successfully as one process unit for so long that if [...]

In terms of mobile productivity, I’m sorry to have to report that the Compaq Airlife 100 has a lot of holes. It does, however, prove that there’s a lot of potential in the ‘smart’ platforms. Long battery life (due to extremely low idle drain) and always-on/connected are features that, once you’ve experienced them, are hard to let go of. Android has potential too but there are 2 key things that [...]
