Summary so far.
For pro-mobile and desktop OS fans, the Archos isn’t really for you and without 3G support, isn’t really a true MID but it is, assuming those bug are ironed out, a great consumer internet, media and (potential) ereader and navigation device. It takes web browsing speed and quality to what I regard as an acceptable level for most consumers and its form factor makes it extremely comfortable for sofa, bed and car use. With a Mifi unit or with tethering (or Wifi of course) this makes a really comfortable, social and stylish coffee-house solution too. A/V media support is excellent.
For me, Archos haven’t created the perfect device but they have confirmed to me, as other devices have done, that the 5 inch screen size is optimal for web, navigation, ereading, media playback and social application support. Note that I’m not even wanting a keyboard which is a rarity for me. Add 3G and fix those stability problems and really, this could be my ideal 3rd device. Even without 3G, it’s going to appeal to many many people out there that are struggling with the cramped experience you get on most phones and the relatively heavyweight and non-finger friendly UMPCs and Intel MIDs.
My advise to potential customers at this stage though is to wait. V1.022 software is too buggy for most people and Archos don’t deserve an early rush on sales for such poor quality control. Take the time to check other reviews and opinion and stay tuned here. I’ll test each firmware as it comes out and give a thumbs-up when I think it’s ready. Disclaimer: I’m assuming I don’t have a faulty device.
Everything exposed. (video from my Ustream channel)
As with most devices we receive, we try to put it through a live session with a live audience. You get to see all the warts and, in this case, my general lack of Android skills. Be aware that there are some errors in the video. E.g. There’s no support for 1080p.I suggested otherwise in the video. The video is over an hour long.
