Finally we move away from Windows 8 Ultrabooks launching at Computex and get to a good ‘old’ regular Ultrabook that’s likely to be available soon. The ASUS S-Series Ultrabooks are 14 and 15 inch with an optical disk drive. This one is aimed at productivity and multimedia. Gamers take note of the Nvidia GT630M and Altec Lansing speakers. The X1 is probably the most referenced laptop by commenters on Ultrabook News so I’m sure many of you will be excited to know that it’s being updated and will be offered, alongside the original X1, as the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon. This isn’t just an Ivy Bridge CPU/GPU update, it’s a full re-work that brings it down to under 3lbs in weight. That’s about 1.35 KG, for a 14” Ultrabook.

Chinese computer maker Haier is showing off an Ultrabook this week at the 2012 Beijing Intel Develop Forum. The Haier Ultrabook is equipped with the lower end Intel Core i3-2367M processor (1.4GHz), making it less powerful, but likely more affordable, than Ultrabooks featuring Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs. At a Toshiba Press event this evening we got a glimpse of the 14” laptop that will be the next Toshiba (USA) Satellite Ultrabook (not high-end Portege brand as the Z835 is in the USA.) At ‘under 4lb’ it’s not the ultra-light that the Z830/Z835 is but you’re looking at a device that will be cheaper than the Z830 and will be targeted at a more mainstream customer. We even caught a brief glimpse of Windows 8 running on it.

Let the Gaming begin! Using the Ultrabook branding, Samsung have officially announced two interesting Ultrabooks that extend the category in a number of directions. The Samsung Series 5 Ultrabooks will offer a larger screen option, terabyte storage and AMD HD7550M discreet graphics in some models.
Samsung Series 5 Ultrabooks launched in homeland, South Korea today.
