Hector, a UMPCPortal reader, has sent us a great owner review of the Samsung Ativ PC 500T along with some really useful videos. For anyone considering a Clover-Trail based tablet or ‘transformer’ convertible, this is a must-read; Especially the battery life section!
The Samsung ATIV 500 and 700, also known as the SmartPC [details] and SmartPC Pro [details] haven’t haven’t been the easiest devices to track through tradeshow and launch events. First highlighted as the Series 5 and Series 7 slates the device names have been cleaned up a little now but we’re sure there’s at least some confusion remaining. Maybe that’s why Samsung have produced an infographic to guide us through the features and differences.
We’ve got six Clover-Trail tablets/dockables on the product database right now and we’re expecting more to pop up soon. Windows 8 provides a nice boost for this category but one of the barriers could be price. [See “Unlikely Smartbook inch] European retail prices for two of these Clover-Trail tablets have already shown up and sure enough, we’re not exactly talking netbook-level pricing. Specs are interesting though.
The Samsung ATIV Smart PC (XE500T) is showing up, without docking keyboard, for just under 700 Euros. The Vivo Tab (FT810C) for 800 Euros. Both come with 64GB of storage, without any 3G.
If you’re looking for the keyboard dock you’ll need to add 100 Euro.
The naming convention used by various Samsung marketing departments around the world has left us confused for quite some time but it looks like everything is slotting into line today with Samsung giving details on final branding and pricing for their touch-enabled Ultrabook and ATIV dockables. The Ativ SmartPC Pro 700T , the Ativ SmartPC 500T and Samsung Ultra Touch are the new touchscreen models. There’s a marketing twist being introduced now though as the ‘SmartPC’ name is used. Actually the name fits well, we wonder whether it might catch on faster than Ultrabook! [We’ve just picked up smartpcnews.com, just in case !]
