If you click through to the large version of that image you’ll see a big list of all the MIDs that are here at IDF. I haven’t seen all of them yet but in the center of the entrance hall, most of them are displayed. I had a bit of hands on but there’s so much going on here right now it’s difficult to get into any detail.
The U2010 is lighter than expected but oh so sweet. Running Vista unfortunately. The Pink WiBrain is a shocker, the Benq really does have a lovely UI (the best i’ve seen yet on a MID) and the Compal/Gigabyte/Aigo is for me, still the most usable form factor.
The others should arrive later today so I’ll be keeping a look out for them and will probably see them in the event that starts at 1800 here.
Later today there should be a video up that I made with Intel about an hour ago where go through some of the MID devices. It’s being edited right now but i’ll send a link over Friendfeed as soon as I have it.
With a little hands on in the W hotel with a few Intel reps. The Lennovo U8 is here and looking beautiful. Shame about the UI which disappoints compared to that other UI-focused mobile Internet device but the style is slick, the browser fast and everyone loves it. I`ll be testing the video performance soon.
IDF starts for real tomorrow morning and the buzz is high. I`ve seen Wibrain and they have the i1 ultra mobile PC with them. Im really interested in seeing that.
130+ comments seems to indicate a serious amount of interest in the Raon Digital Everun Note that we’ve been talking about over the last few days. There are concerns about the battery life and the credibility of the CrystalMark tests and slight disappointment that it doesn’t have a swivel screen but on the whole, people seem to be very interested. I’m guessing a lot of orders for the SC3 just went on hold until independent info becomes available and its probably because of the thought that there might be a ultra mobile PC on the horizon that satisfies even the most demanding of road warriors. At about 4am on Saturday I’ll be waking up to start my journey to San Francisco for the Intel Developer Forum (IDF)which starts the following Tuesday. I should be there about 20 hours later after I’ve made my way to Frankfurt and done the two-part flight via Portland. I really hope there are charging points on the plane!!
IDF is Intel’s 3-times yearly event that brings together partners, developers, journalists and exhibitors and presents them with a 3-day Intel-fest of the latest advances, products, methods and technologies. For readers here it means that we’ll be able to get the latest information about Intel’s UMPC, Mobile Internet Devices and Netbook platforms, get involved in Ultra Mobile conversation with other attendees and even get some training in the areas of software and hardware design. Article continues…
Follow my Friendfeed for micro-updates and of course, UMPCPortal.com for news. The live page will be open and I’ll try and join in with the cam as often as I can.
Before I get all excited, I better say up front that the info here is mostly from Raon Digitals marketing group. That said…WOW! The Everun Note could be the most powerful ultra mobile PC yet.
Raon have sent over some early marketing material for the Everun Note and there’s a whole lot of interesting information in it. The most interesting is a set of Crystal Mark test results that are showing stunning processing performances figures that are way faster than anything on the ultra mobile PC and netbook market. It blows the 1.3Ghz Core-based Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium out of the water and netbooks are going to look extremely slow beside it! (more after the pic…)
Here’s a classic case of the Ultra Mobile category falling short of requirements. The jack-of-all-trades mobile devices I love just won’t be good enough for my work at IDF next week.
Firstly there’s the camera. When I’m out and about the Nokia N82 does a fantastic job of being able to take good photos and Internet-quality videos. Its an ultra mobile multimedia creation device that is largely unmatched in the smartphone world and yet its not good enough. I’ll need a zoom lens, long battery life, easily changeable SD cards, low-light optics, good 30fps video quality and some image stabilisation. The N82 isn’t good enough so I’ll have to take the S2IS in addition to the N82. (more after the jump…)
So AMD aren’t getting into the mobile or netbook game?
Raon Digital have finally confirmed what we spotted months ago. They are building an AMD-based (AMD Turion 64×2 Dual Core 1.2GHz, 1MB L2 Cache) ultra mobile PC running XP for Asian and North American markets. This is not a netbook as it’s tiny! Smaller than an SC3. The AVING news is from a launch event that I knew was happening today. We’re closely in touch with Raon Digital and have our fingers crossed for more details and an early preview of this little wonder.
