ASUS Zenbook Infinity Ultrabook is 15.5mm with Haswell and Touch

ASUS Zenbook Infinity Ultrabook_2

At 15.5mm with a touchscreen, the ASUS Zenbook Infinity is one amazingly thin Ultrabook. Gorilla Glass lid, backlit keyboard, 2560×1440 resolution, 4th-Gen Intel Core and more although at this stage the full specifications aren’t known. The ASUS Zenbook Infinity is being launched at Computex and although it wasn’t mentioned in the ASUS press conference, a preview model was shown behind glass.

Update: We’re tracking news, videos, specifications on the Zenbook Infinity here in our database.

Ultrabooks get Meaning, Unique Selling Points with Haswell

Ultrabooks. Copies of the MacBook Air. Expensive laptops. Bringing nothing new to the table. I’ve read it all and discussed it all but knew from day 1 that there would be something special coming. Having followed Atom from day 1 to the point where Moorestown finally got the architecture right I knew what Intel could achieve. Haswell was built with the next generation laptop in mind. It’s HDR-Computing with Connected Standby, some of the best integrated graphics on the market, video engines that can process end-to-end 4K and TDP’s that will allow manufacturers to design PCs you never thought were possible. With Haswell, Ultrabooks get meaning.

Haswell Launches. Y-Series Processors Down to 6W SDP

U-series Y-Series Haswell

The Intel 4th Generation Core has launched and although the U-Series CPU’s are interesting, it’s the Y-Series Core processors that will be interesting for ultra mobiles in 2013 and 2014. Full details and part numbers, availability and pricing may not be available for some time although Intel have said that some products will be available this month. We hope the Y-Series Haswell processors will be inside some of them.

6W SDP (scenario design power it’s a lower number than TDP) is what Intel is highlighting but don’t expect devices based on this platform to have screens smaller than 10 inch because Y-Series Haswell is all about being able to get everything packed into a tablet design. We still need to wait for Bay Trail for the possibility of handheld and modular solutions.

Expect 11.6 inch tablet, detachable, convertibles and ultra-thin Ultrabooks with the Y-Series CPU. Indications are that tablets based on the Y-series 4th Gen Core could be as thin as 10mm.

We’re also expecting Y-series processors to be used in some Connected Standby-capable products which will require extremely tight mainboard design.

Performance won’t be up there with the best of the new 4th-Gen U-series but should be comparable with CPU performance seen on the 1.4 and 1.5Ghz Core i3 and Core 5 Y-Series available with the Ivy Bridge architecture now.

Much more information on Intel’s 4th Gen Core and mobile products is expected over the next week as Computex gets under way. We’ll be filtering all that into a stream of Ultra Mobile news for you here.

Intel Details Huge Battery Life Increases for Ultrabook platforms

intel-slide-battery-life-haswell

It’s not like we weren’t expecting this. We had a good idea last September and wrote about Haswell’s potential to increase battery life back in Jan. Intal have released some slides today that show some more details.

The new Core i7-4650U, a 15W TDP part, could offer 50% more video playback time over the Core i7-3667U (which Intel cheekily calls a 20W TDP platform now that it matters!) It’s the same story as we saw on Intel Clovertrail last year and that improvement is likely to rise for smaller-screen Ultrabooks and tablets. More importantly, standby time is improved although Intel haven’t talked about Connected Standby here which means that with Windows 8, Metro apps can be running in the background while the desktop is off. Expect to see some figures for that over the next few days as more details are made public and Computex press events happen tomorrow (Monday morning in Taiwan.)

Remember that these are very specific scenarios but even in general use we’re expecting the much lower background drain to bring big increases in battery life.

Intel Launches 4th-Gen Core. Haswell available in Devices from 4th June.

Intel-Haswell-Die-ShotIt’s finally happened. Intel’s 4th-Gen Core has launched.

At time of writing we’re not seeing any news direct from Intel and it looks like only quad-core reviews are being let out of the gate for the time being but there’s one important bit of news we’re picking up and that’s that products with Haswell inside will be available starting 4th June. Yes, next week. Those products include tablets so we assume that the first Ultrabooks with Haswell will be available too.

First out of the gate onto our search results was Techage but there’s already a Core i7-4440K (desktop part) review available from Hexus and PC Advisor.

At this stage there’s not much more we can add so we’ll leave it at that and resume our search for more Ultrabook news related to Haswell and 4th-Gen Core.

We’ll update with the Intel PR when we find it.

Update: Engadget are claiming Haswell will officially launch on 4th June. At this stage I think we can safely say that it’s official and ignore any reference to ‘launch.’

Intel 4th-Gen Core. Leaking Now, Launching Soon! (Update: Promo Video Live)

Computex is just days away, an Intel 4th-Gen Core launch party invite has gone out, we’ve spotted a ramp-up of Intel Ultrabook advertising and Intel have even slipped up with a 4th-Gen Core YouTube video that’s now been removed. Intel’s 4th-Gen Core, previously codenamed Haswell, will launch in the next days.

Do You See the PC Opportunity in the Growing Tablet Space?

Toshoba Portege Z10T _3_I read a few IDC new releases today. The PC outlook is bad. The Tablet outlook is good.

Take another look though, ignore some of the news articles riding on the back of the headline PR and you’ll see something interesting. Firstly there’s no obvious consideration of PC evolution into the tablet market. Secondly, there’s a huge opportunity opening up in the 8-13 inch segment. As tablet users start to prefer those smaller, cheaper tablet devices, more value and capability is needed in the larger screen segment.
