This is an interesting one. The design looks slim, working and, well, almost complete! Intel’s reps tell us that it’s just a prototype and maybe this is something ASUS worked on before they decided on the 12 inch Eee Pad that we saw at the ASUS press conference but we like it and hope they pursue it on the Oak Trail platform in 2011. It looks like it’s currently on the Menlow platform.

We caught a sniff of a hint that an Android device was in the works when we met Viliv at CS in Jan and here it is. A 10 inch slate-style device with the usual high quality Viliv design and materials that turns out to be one of the best we’ve seen here at Computex. (It’s in the running with the MeeGo tablet and the Huawei S7 for me right now.)
The X10 runs on a Samsung 1Ghz Cortex A8-based CPU and, even in the early stage of the software build looks fast. Check out the brochure image for a few more tech details. The X10 is being penciled in for Q4 and Viliv appear confident that they will get marketplace and Google applications onto the device for launch. I asked about price and the only hints I could get were that it would come in at a price below the Viliv S5. We’re looking at the sub $500 bracket here which of course, is a figure you could probably work-out yourself!
Viliv have also worked on a Windows 7 version of the X10 and I’ll have some information about that in a later post.
Check out the video below where I take you round the device, demo a fast racing game which looks great on the 1366×768 screen, show you the Aldiko book reader and talk about some of the specifications.

Linpus are working on Linpus Lite Slate Edition and, in-line with Intel Moorestown and Oak Trail-based products, is planned for tablet PC’s of 2011. We took some time to speak to Linpus about Lite and MeeGo too.
Linpus Lite appears on Acer Netbooks and is expected to be the distribution that will appear on Acers’s MeeGo netbooks.
The video was shot just before the Intel keynote in which the MeeGo tablet UI was announced.

Update: Hands-on video and price now available.
We’ve seen the Huawei S7 before but have never had hands-on or even knew the details on the platform being used to drive it. At the Qualcomm press location today I got to sort both of those issues out and walked away impressed. This is a full 7 inch capacitive tablet running Android 2.1 with voice, 3G and full Google application suite. Yes, it makes calls but the form factor is just perfect for one-handed use. Personally, I think its the best Android tablet I’ve seen so far. No details on price or availability but we assume that Huawei will using their existing channels and partners to get this out. It won’t be cheap, but it’s got everything needed. I have a video that I’ll upload later. What do you think?

More details on the Huawei S7 in our database.

The Atom Software summit is just kicking of here at Computex. We’re expecting to hear about roadmap, support for advanced features such as multitouch, sensors, gestures. Different UI models from handset to netbook will be shown too. There’s also some hardware here that we’ll get to play with.
Stay tuned for updates throughout the day because later we join the ultra mobility group for their presentation.
Update: Full overview of the session is now available.

Hello from the Intel Atom Software Summit at Computex Taipei.

I’ve just posted news over at UMPCPortal about a Wistron MeeGo Tablet based on Moorestown, running MeeGo. There’s more though. Take this for a huge hint about what’s happening at the Linpus stand…

And this, a netbook platform being used to demonstrate MeeGo.

(Video demo of that one later)

David Flynn of APCmag.com in Australia has uncovered an interesting device whilst at Acer’s Source Home conference in Beijing. The as-yet unnamed tablet devices is running Google’s Android operating system and sports a full QWERTY keyboard and embedded 3G.
APCmag qouted Acers CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci as saying the device should arrive in Q4 of these year. Lanci also states that although the tablet is similar to the iPad “We are not convinced that 10 inches is the right size for this type of device. It becomes too close to a netbook in size, and why should it not be a netbook with full PC capability? inch
The device will have Acer’s own user interface and be used primarily for “books, music and videos, browsing the internet, email and chatting inch Lanci says, he goes on to say that “Android is very good in terms of Internet browsing and connectivity. You can run it on an ARM processor at a certain speed and Android is light enough not to overload the CPU inch.

Further details are slim at the moment but from what I can tell it looks like it could make an excellent ebook reader. We’ll be keeping a look out for this at Computex next week.

Wondermedia are a subsidiary of VIA Technologies that launched their product, an ARM-based platform for low-power computing appliances, this time last year. We’ve heard a few bits and pieces about them over the year but it seems that they are now gearing up for a wave of customer products that will launch later this year.
Richard Brown, Marketing manager for VIA, has been in the U.S. briefing the press and has also taken the time to write up a little bit of information on his blog. The press articles I’ve seen so far are hardly worth reading (Bloomberg simply taking the opportunity to spin an iPad article) but expect to see more soon. We’ll try and hook-up with Richard at Computex next week and get some hands-on for you too.
Please don’t expect iPad-killers though. The Wondermedia PRIZM platform is ARM9 based, contains DNLA support and video decoding hardware and is really targeted at simple internet and media presentation rather than multitasking and a rich, fast web experience. It’s comparable to the Rockchip in the Archos 7 Home Tablet which is already in the market.
