Buyers Guide – Real Pocket PC

Posted on 21 July 2011

OQO, Everun, Viliv. You guys knew there was a desire out there for a true Pocket PC but alas, it was too small for you to survive on. So what do we do now? A customer came to me last week and asked about the Benq S6. Remember that one? We started writing about it in Jan 2008 and by mid 2009, there wasn’t much to be heard from it anymore. A version with XP was selling for a bargain basement price in Italy, if I recall correctly, but that […]

Moving on from the Nokia N8 Cameraphone. Updated with ‘Backtrack’

Posted on 21 July 2011

It was a tough move but following a failed OVI store upgrade on my N8 (loan from Nokia) this morning I decided that enough is enough. I’ve seen enough software install and update failures to tell me that I should move on. Considering the fact that I’m excited about Google Plus on Android along with the instant photo upload feature, the time is right. I know I’ll miss that camera but I have to move on so the N8 is packaged and ready to be returned. Thanks for the thousands […]

Apple MacBook Air Update matches Samsung Series 9

Posted on 20 July 2011

Both the Samsung 900X1B and the Apple MacBook Air that was announced today should be available from tomorrow. Both weigh the same. Both use a similar ‘Sandy Bridge’ platform, both offer an 11.6″ screen, both look sleek and both cost about $1000. One runs Windows 7, the other runs the newly-available Apple OS X Lion operating system.  VS  Click for specs Both are, in my eyes, Ultrabooks. Intel may not agree when they finally publish their Ultrabook sepcifications but for the time being, this is about as close as it […]

Archos Announces Two Unique Tablets — Honeycomb, 250GB HDD Option, Modular 3G, Well Priced [video]

Posted on 20 July 2011

Archos has unveiled two “bang for bucks inch Android Honeycomb tablets: the 8-inch (1024×768, 4:3) ’80 G9′ and the 10.1-inch (1280×800, 1.6:1) ‘101 G9’. The 80 and the 101 both use a dual-core TI OMAP 4460 processor running at 1.5GHz. With more grunt under the hood than most Tegra 2-powered Android tablets in the market these days, the tablet looks promising to deliver a silky smooth multitasking experience as well as high resolution video playback. Archos claims that the OMAP 4460 CPU is up to 50% faster than Nvidia’s Tegra 2 in certain […]

When Will Apple Jump on the 4G Bandwagon?

Posted on 20 July 2011

We’re not into Apple rumors here at Carrypad, but what we are into is informed speculation. Join us for some healthy analysis about when and how Apple will make the move to 4G. Based on Apple’s Q3 sales figures that were just released today, it’s clear that Apple is doing extremely well, even without a single 4G product in its stables. This is interesting because 4G is one of the only areas where the iPhone and iPad are behind, rather than being ahead of, or at least on-par with, the […]

Lenovo Ideapad P1. Lightweight Tablet with Digitiser, Multi-Boot Possibilities

Posted on 20 July 2011

Go into our product database, select Tablet Devices (Windows), click the weight and screen size column headers and you’ll get a list showing the lightest 10 inch Windows Tablet. The only device that comes in at under 800gm is the Viliv X10 which, as we now know, isn’t going to happen. The Lenovo Ideapad P1will be dropping into that list very shortly as one of the lightest Windows Tablets there is. It’s a trend that’s happening more and more now that Oaktrail is here. The great thing is that battery […]

Toshiba Thrive Trades Function for Girth — Hands-on from Liliputing [video]

Posted on 19 July 2011

There is a part of design that is math and engineering. Weight, power, SAR ratings, maintenance envelopes… the basic stuff you get in any mechanical or systems engineering curriculum at your friendly neighborhood college. Then there is part of design that is art. And an additional part that is empathy; that part where the designers try and guess the subjective viewpoint some users will take, and use that to drive some of the design trade-offs they choose to make. Why do I wax so poetic about the art of design? Because I […]

Sources: Viliv Closing Shop

Posted on 19 July 2011

If this is true, I won’t be surprised because there’s been a trail of hints over the last few months that have already led me to put warnings out about Viliv. According to not one, but two of our business contacts, Viliv is just about ready to shut up shop. Our sources tell us that Viliv have been in receivership for a while and despite trying to find a buyer for some of their unique ultra-mobile computing solutions, have failed to secure a future for them. It looks like its […]
