Mobile Creators Kit 2023

Posted on 15 December 2023, Last updated on 16 December 2023 by

Previously, over the last 15 years, I’ve written about mobile reporting kits. The focus was on written articles, enhanced with photography. That, of course, has changed as video becomes the primary content type for many people. The mobile creators kit, takes that video-first approach too. It’s tried, tested and relatively low-cost.

There are three 4k cameras here, and that’s not including the full-hd video available from the Chromebook.

The kit here isn’t ground-breaking and, to be honest, could have been a 2022 kit. There’s a camera in here that’s at least seven years old too. But the point is that it’s well-tested. This isn’t an Amazon Wishlist, it’s fully, fully tested!

  • Google Pixel 6 – Still great. Obviously the 8 would be better but I have no real issues with this. It’s still great. You have options here and the iPhone is at the top of that list.
  • Powerbank – 74Wh 20000mAh. Try and get a good quality PD-capable one.
  • Zoom H1 (V1) Audio mic and recorder. Great battery life, external and internal mic.
  • Rodelink Pro Mic. Very good quality. About 90 ($€£)
  • GoPro Hero 9 – Great prices for these now…and they are still fantastic…until the lights go low!
  • GoPro Three-way tripod
  • Panasonic Lumix G7 4K/30, and lenses, including F1.7 for low-light or fast lens work.
  • Telesin three-battery USB-C charging pack (GoPro 9 version)
  • Lenovo Duet 3 Chromebook. (ARM-based CPU, 2022. I’ve reviewed it separately.)

You might want to go with a 4K/60 main camera, or the GoPro 11 with its improved sensor, a newer Zoom mic or even a MacBook that will enable stress-free video editing.

I’ve laboured over the idea that I need a bigger tripod, or a quadcopter, or some lighting but I’m not running a major adventure channel on YouTube here, I’m mostly a hobbyist on a motorbike now.

The motorbiking kit is another Ultra-Mobile topic!

Finally, there’s the question of backup connectivity. If I lose the Pixel 6 I need a fallback for connectivity. I have an old Huawei P10 covering that.

The total cost of the equipment here is under ($£€) 2000 and the total weight in the bag was 2.45kg / 5.5lb

As always, I’d love to hear about your latest mobile computing kit. Use the videos or the comment section below.
