Viewsonic Viewpad 7 – Video Overview

Chatting to people around IFA today we’re all agreeing that the Viewsonic Viewpad is another ‘complete’ Android Tablet product. Apart from the latest Ghz-class CPU, and lets not forget that a 600Mhz Cortex A8-class CPU isn’t actually that bad, it has everything needed for the full Android experience. From camera to 3G. From GPS to Market. From capacative touch to good build quality. You can even use this for voice calls.

The price is 399 Euro (maximum) which we think is very competitive indeed.

In the video below we go over the device and run a few tests, including the voice call!

Correction: IN the video I talked about a 1024×600 screen. We’re checking this. At the moment the general opinion is that it’s an 800×480 screen. That does make some difference for web browsing it will be difficult to detect any downside when using it in apps that are all designed for smaller resolutions anyway.

Viewsonic Viewpad 7 – Shaping up Nicely. Pics, Thoughts.

We’ve got a few videos coming up on the Viewsonic Viewpad 7 but first, here’s the pics and a few thoughts (I need to hit decent internet connection before I upload the videos they’ll come later.)

In summary, the Viewsonic Viewpad 7 is delivering most of what the Galaxy Tab is delivering, for an excellent price. You haven’t quite got the build quality (it’s good though) and you’ve got a known brand, Android 2.2, capacitive touch (good screen quality), 3G, voice and the Google apps. The only thing you might notice is the user interface. It’s not as swift as the Galaxy Tab and that’s clearly because the CPU is a Snapdragon at 600Mhz and not the high-end A8 Cortex device of the Samsung. It’s not bad though and in my tests over 3G I was happy.

The price, BTW is a decent 399 Euro (350 UK pounds) and it’s coming soon. (Within the next few months)

Watch out for more later. I’ve got two videos of the Viewsonic Viewpad 7 and I’ll also be checking  out the Viewpad 10, an X86 device.

Video – Toshiba Folio 100

We didn’t get a huge chance for hands-on as we stumbled across the Toshiba press event at IFA today and with the device locked to the wall, without and sort of Internet connection and without any supporting technical staff, it was difficult to do a good test on the Toshiba Folio 100. We want to go back and ask about pricing, Google apps and Android 2.2 availability for the keyboarded version that we’re doing extended testing on, the AC100. I’ve published a video on YouTube (below) that might give you a few snippets of information about the Folio but we’ll be back over the next few days with more information. We promise!

Samsung Galaxy Tab – Sunspider and Quadrant Benchmarks

MVI_4559_0001 After our hands-on with the Galaxy Tab we couldn’t resist a few benchmark tests. In the video below you’ll see the Sunspider test which is a single-threaded test. For reference we’ve seen 9000ms on the iPad and just under that on Tegra 2 (with Android 2.1) A netbook comes in at about 2000ms. The Galaxy Tab? About 7500ms showing that the a single CPU core (we’re not 100% on the CPU details yet we suspect a single Cortex A9 core at the moment.)

Next up you’ll see the Quadrant test that we ran on the Tegra 2 platform this week. On the Toshiba AC100 we saw a very impressive score of 1911 which is one amazing score. Remember the Quadrant test is a CPU, 2D and 3D test so it tests more than just the CPU. On the Galaxy Tab we saw a score of 1064. That might sound a lot less than the Tegra2 platform but it’s more than the impressive Samsung Galaxy S!

All is revealed in the video below.

Galaxy Tab – Hands on at IFA. (Video, Pics)

We’ve managed to get some time with the Galaxy Tab at IFA and we’ve got pics, a video and some benchmarks following in the next post. It’s quite the looker, performer and a very good all-round tablet package.

Fist impressions: Slick, fast, great weight/size ratio and Samsung have managed to include the Google applications AND their own app creations. The screen is sharp and, as expected actually, great quality with a contrast, brightness and ‘pop’ that we grew fond of with the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC. Web sites loaded quickly and cleanly over 3G and capacative touch was smooth. Stereo speakers are loud and of good quality for the size. Another trick that Samsung performed on the Q1 Ultra!

We got an iPad and Dell Streak in for size comparisons and as you can see, it’s less than half the size of the iPad.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Comparison

As for iPad and Dell Streak comparisons, I’m going to spend a few days thinking about it before I put any thoughts forward. We’ll get some more hands-on over the next few days and test out the Samsung apps and some applications from the Market. Stay tuned.

On to the hands-on video. [Uploading NOW!  Update: Benchmark details to follow in next post.]

Benchmark video also available.

Galaxy Tab – First Thoughts

Update: We’ve got our own hands-on videos and pics. Hands-on is here. Benchmarking information available here.

Engadget have  preview of the Galaxy Tab up right now. I’m sitting on the train and thinking…

galaxy-tab

Cortex A9? I didn’t think Samsung had a Cortex A9 but obviously I’m wrong. This WILL be faster than an iPad. Froyo includes Cortex core optimisations.

Docking port Great. Opens up loads of possibilities.

Samsung apps Prooving that Market apps just arent’ ready for the big screen. I hope this product stimulates developers to start thinking about the big screen and for Google to finally put the large screen capability into the Android screen profiles.

Dual Cameras Obviously there to satisfy Google’s requirements. Wonder if Samsung have put their cam software on the device. It’s usually good.

15wh battery (assuming single cell could be double cell for a big 30Wh capacity but I doubt it on a 7 inch pad) I guess we’re looking at, about 7hrs online, screen-on. Of course, days in standby.

Weight No specs given so far but I think we’re talking 400gm judging by the comments from around the Twitterverse, (Update: 380gm – VERY good)

1024×600 screen. Phew!

Bluetooth 3.0 – Low power goodness.

HSPA with 5.6mbps upload (Europe) – That’s reat for 2011, especially in the leading 3G countries. Finland, Germany, UK etc.

Supports UMTS video calling Great for Europe.

We’re updating our product page now.

Price? 799 Euro.

WOW!

That’s a huge amount of money.  Now who’s buying?

Should we take another look at that Viewsonic Viewpad?

Camangi Goes for 2nd-attempt with FM600 Android Tablet. Update: Video

Camangi FM600

Update: Product page now available.

Update: We got hands-on at IFA.

httpsh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8ZcEgT83yc

We won’t spend too much time reminding you of the Camangi Webstation. Despite a nice look, it was a rather weak entry into the tablet market. The Camangi Market launched at the same time and promised to offer tablet-focused apps. With just 80 apps (that I can find) its no wonder that the new Camangi product will have Google applications and the all-important Market.

The Sheng Tung Development Co., Ltd. are a supplier of Tawanese good and partner to Camangi are at IFA this week. They’ve posted information about the new, FM600 model on the IFA website. I’ve highlighted the important features.

We’ll be heading to their booth as soon as we can. (Probably on Friday)

IFA Coverage Starts on Thursday

I’m already testing and charging my kit for IFA because on Thursday morning I’ll be on my way up to Berlin to start coverage. The 2nd of Sept is a press and launch day and we expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy Tab in the morning. Unfortunately I’ll still be in the train but I’ll be watching out for news. In the evening we’ll get to see the Tab at the Showstoppers event. We’ll also have a chance to speak to HP.

On Friday we’ll be hitting the floor and covering as much as we can for you. We’ll give Toshiba a visit to find out about the ‘Smart Pad’ (and the plans for the AC100) and we’ve got a good list of other events and booths to attend too. There’s a tweet-up in the evening.

On the 4th we’re covering the floor again but in the afternoon we’re attending the Intel Software event where we’ll get some Atom, AppUp and MeeGo info and hopefully, hands on with the WeTab.

240520102453The 5th will see us on the show floor again so you can expect a big bunch of content both here and over at UMPCPortal going into the following week.

As for equipment I’m afraid its nothing really new again. I’ve got the good old Gigabyte Touchnote and the Canon S2IS that I use for photos and video. The Xperia X10 will be my phone but I’ll also take the N82 as a Flickr Camera and backup. The suspicious looking MiFi and Power-Pack combo will do its job as the roaming hotspot. I used the same setup at Computex and you can read more about that here.

I’ll also be taking the Toshiba AC100, the Viliv N5, S10, X70, S5, U820 and the UMID BZ to the Intel meet-up on the 4th so I’ll have a few backups should anything go wrong!

And once IFA is all over, we’re off to California for the Intel Developer Forum. More about that soon.
